A client requested a copy of the documentary Friendly Touchdown which deals with the Australian national rugby team visiting South Africa in 1963 and I was viewing it yesterday ~ quite a jolly doccie: it starts with the entire Wallaby team singing Waltzing Mathilda on board the aircraft.  :teddyr:
We shall meet in the place where there is no darkness.

Waltzing Matilda is more of a national anthem to most people here than the actual anthem.  That or drunkenly shouting 'Aussie Aussie Aussie! Oi! Oi! Oi!' at any major international sporting event.

That is pretty much the same for our unofficial national anthem Shosholoza which gives me major goosebumps every time I hear a crowd or choir singing it.

The whole 1963 Wallaby team were smiling and singing Waltzing Mathilda out loud: what made me laugh is that the flight attendant was almost hiding behind the curtains.  :teddyr:

Me, too. I first remember it, when we were studying about Australia, when I was about 11 or 12, and in the 6th grade.
It may be the unofficial national anthem of Australia, but why the Australians never made it their official anthem, I'll never know. Anyway, a great song that packs a huge emotional wallop Australian style.
