Unknown serial killer thriller

Hi All,

I vaguely recall seeing clips from a film made in the late 90s or early 2000s with a sequence where detectives are attempting to pinpoint a serial killer by playing an audio recording of a crime scene over and over and over again. The audio recordings play out onscreen and are visualized with sound patterns on monitors that the detectives are watching. Does this ring a bell for anyone?
