WER (2013)

My daughter saw the trailer for this film online months ago and mentioned it to me; I had quite forgotten about it when I saw the movie on the
new releases shelf at Hasting's yesterday, but she hadn't, and squealed with excitement when she saw the DVD.

This is the best werewolf movie in ages.  I was pleasantly surprised by what an all-around quality film this is. 
An American family vacationing in France are brutally butchered by a huge, hulking, hairy killer.  The surviving mother
describes a hairy, humanoid figure with "enormous hands" eating her 7 year old son alive after tearing her husband's throat
out.

The police investigators, led by Detective Pistor (played by one of my favorite actors, Sebastian Roche), quickly arrest a local man
named Talan Gwinek - brilliantly played by Brian O'Connor - and charge him with both killings.  Talan certainly fits the killer's
description - he is nearly seven feet tall, hairy, and has enormous hands - but he suffers from a debilitating illness that leaves
him barely capable of moving around, much less of conducting such a violent and brutal assault.  A beautiful American expatriate
attorney, Kate Moore, volunteers to be his defense attorney.

But as further tests are done, trying to figure out if Talan was capable of such things, Kate comes to wonder about her initial assessment
of his innocence.  When one test triggers a violent seizure, it becomes apparent  that there is much more wrong about Talan Gwinek
than the police or his attorney had realized . . .

Brutally violent, suspenseful, and carefully shot, this is a groundbreaking film, similar in its impact to THE HOWLING or AN AMERICAN
WEREWOLF IN LONDON.  I highly recommend it!

Hard to believe it's from the same director who gave us the wreck The Devil Inside (2012)

I have the Wer Blu-ray on preorder, and it will be part of my Halloween/October viewings.

I haven't see the film, but I have always thought the French had the best name for such an one. Not a wolf man nor a werewolf nor a lycanthrope, but a loup garou. There is just such a ring to that, the others do just not have (IMHO.)

I enjoyed this one, and I'd agree it is one of the better recent werewolf movies - though that isn't saying much, as our poor lupine friends get pretty shabby film treatment compared to other monsters. 

It's been a while, but my biggest complain is I found the final third of it to be poorly put together.  I liked it conceptually, just thought the execution flopped.  Memory is a little vague though.  I'd give it a 6/10, but I would still recommend it for the first two acts.
