The way I recall it, Dudes (1987) was advertised as some sort of unoriginal, ultra predictable slapstick farce about some college kids who decide to go camping & end up not getting along with the locals, just like in Chevy Chase's Vacation franchise (among other forgettable movies)...

I came across this in the video store a few years later in the action/adventure section & thought it had been filed incorrectly.
Then I saw the picture of John Cryer & Daniel Roebuck looking all bad@$$ on the front, & read the synopsis on the back & read about two guys setting out for revenge after the bass player for The Red Hot Chili Peppers gets killed... So I rented it.

The moments that were depicted in the trailers certainly didn't do the movie justice.

The movie Memoires of an Invisible Man was marketed as a comedy, but really wasn't.

Biggest one to me was Changing Lanes with Samuel Jackson and Ben Affleck is kind of marketing as ever escalating, action packed back and forth game of revenge between the two stars, but no, not really.  It's more a drama/commentary on social status.
