Those are a hoot!

This one.....

"˜Why is everyone driving on the wrong side of the road?' – Saskia Bok

....reminds me of the time I was walking back to where I was staying in England late at night, dead tired, and looked left (like Americans do) before crossing the street half asleep so I didn't think to look right, and I almost got hit by a car that way.

Say, why DO y'all drive on the wrong side of the road, anyway???
What does not kill me makes me stranger.

When I was learning to drive back in 1984, I tried to drive on the right, my Dad hit me upside the head and said "You'll add lots of excitement to your life if you drive on the right."  :teddyr: :teddyr:

Yeah, we do this while riding wooden giraffs and after the lions have stopped roaring. But first we have to release all the animals out of their cages and let thm run around for awhile

Yes, I used to get asked similar questions "I always thought Africans were black, so why are you white?" and "Why do you speak funny?" (Afrikaans)

eish!

I was born in Bloemfontein, then moved to Cape Town, J'burg and then finally England.

Despite all the jokes about Bloem being the most boring, flatest and dullest city in SA, I like it for its history above all else. Plus JRR Tolkien was born there too

Bloem is a nice place: I go there once a year for outreach at the Arts Festival.

Last year, some burnt down the City Hall!  :hatred:

Yes, I read about that: still not sure who to blame, but I would seriously hope experts can restore the building to its former glory.

Not a silly question, a real one, but in South Africa, what is the accepted term for black people? I've heard "black" and "blacks" said often and I heard a safari guide the other night refer to black South Africans as "native Africans" and it reminded me of how "American Indians" are termed Native Americans, even by people whose families have been in North America for centuries. So is there a term that's in general use there, rather like how in the United States it's often "African-Americans"?

I visited SA for a few months last year to meet up with some relations and old friends. And to be honest I never actually used the descriptive term to describe a black person; although some of my friends use "coloureds" which isn't wholly acceptable in some quarters. Perhaps Trevor can elaborate?

But whatever you do never use the K word, which is just as offensive as the N word

Alex

Yeah, a guy I used to work beside had a habit of referring to people as gaffer (meaning boss). There was a bit of a mix up when a black guy misheard him and thought he was using the k work.
