Since it got brought up on FB this week, I thought I'd write about it in my blog:  Did Jesus exist?

He was a historical person, but he was also a Robin Hood type anti establishment codeword/ legend of sorts or functioned that way.

If you read Revelation, Christianity was anti Roman and anti Jewish or at least anti Pharisees in nature and Jesus was the centerpiece of all that. It had a political as well as a spiritual side.

That was beautifully composed, Indy. Well reasoned and well-written.

Rev, for some reason I can no longer see video links in this forum, so I have no idea what you posted.

Me either, but you can always click on the link. It's a fairly silly song.

People who don't believe Jesus existed are called mythicists. There are two main ones: one of them is robert price whose "bible geek" podcast is awesome (he also  has a Lovecraft one I've never heard). The other is this guy Richard Carrier who is so annoying it's practically incredible. I have no real skin in the game in the debate, but he is so full of himself and has a gross polyamory thing going... its makes it easy to just write the whole thing off.

is your issue polyamory itself, or is it HIM practicing it that bugs you, lester?

lester1/2jr

No, he is just gross and awful and arrogant . People can do what they want

I do believe in him, maybe because I am Catholic and I have known him since I was young. I do respect the atheist but then again we have different beliefs and it is only a matter of acceptance.

There is a huge line between "I believe Jesus was a historically significant figure but not the Son of God," and "Jesus of Nazareth never existed."
His deity is a matter of theology, but his existence is a matter of history, which is what I tried to explain.

But thanks to all who took the time to read my scribblings!

Theres not much of a record of anyone from back then. Pontius Pilate appears on some sort of leger and relatively recently they found a coin from that era. other than that there is techniically no "record" of him. Jesus in his life was a very margenalized figure I mean thats kind of the point

indianasmith

Jesus is better represented in history than the ten year governor of Judea, that's true.
