After 20 years, I'm moving

I don't actually know how to feel about this.

I've lived in the same garden flat for twenty years: moved in there in November 1998 and I have been happy there: rent is affordable, it's in a quiet neighbourhood, nice neighbours, etc. Now my landlord is refurbishing the entire house (bit by bit obviously) and he asked me to move over to the other flat which has already been fixed. I cannot describe what a wrench this is to my system: I was actually in tears on Saturday evening.

OK, the flat I'm moving to is bigger, quieter and more secure than the one I'm in now, there's a shower instead of a bath, gas cooker, carport for my car and all that. What it isn't is the home I've lived in for 20 years (although it is the same house). Am I going crazy being so upset at moving although my landlord said they did not want to lose me as I am the best tenant they've ever had?

Advice, guys, please: I feel like I'm going nuts.

We shall meet in the place where there is no darkness.

If you are moving after not moving for 20 years, I'd recommend a very, very large toilet.  :teddyr:

ok, seriously, make sure to take you bedding and blanket with you, the familiar smell will help you sleep better. Don't washe them before the move. If you can take the bed with you do that.

Give it a try Trevor. Maybe you will like the new place more, and if not you could always ask your landlord if you can move back to the old place after the refurbishment is finished.

After a month in the new place, it will feel like home.  Focus your thoughts on all the ways it's an upgrade. No worries mate.
I'll take you places the hand of man has not yet set foot...

I can understand you feeling upset.  People get attached to things after a long time.  There's no shame there.

One thing about moving though, you never realize how much junk you have that you don't need until it's time to move it all.

for once, sven is right, trev. familiar smells will help more than anything. i know how you're feeling, since we had been in our old house over 20 years and moved this last november.
you'll be doing the opposite of us, in moving to a bigger place, we downsized by almost 1/2.
that wasn't the strangest thing though. the strangest thing was the difference in light from the windows. this place is north/south, the old house was east/west, and set up higher on the foundation, and had a huge front porch that got in the way of light through the windows.
one thing we did to help settle us was keeping the furniture configuration as close as possible to the old house. that might help you too.

Thanks for the "compliment".

Well, I've moved.

I need some hands to come help me sort out 300 tapes and DVDs as well as over 400 books.

Payment will be made in the form of soft drinks and pizza.

That always worked for me.

True words indeed.

So far so good - just damn cold - but the option to move back to where I was happy has gone: my old flat was demolished on Saturday and they won't be rebuilding it.  :bluesad:

When you've moved in Trevor, let us know how it is going and how you feel in the new place.

Pros:

A carport for my car.
A shower
A nice view
More space
Better security
Everything works.

Cons:

I may have to move again in three months
Place is bloody cold
Noisy pool pump
No more fapping in front of the window  :buggedout:

Seriously, I stood in what was my home for two decades yesterday and there is nothing there now except bricks and dust.  :bluesad:

get one of those bricks, trev, and keep it. it will be a symbol of your happiness there, AND your willingness to move on, see?
