Did this movie ever scare you? I don't get its high fear factor. Lots of things give me the creeps but a shark (especially a silly looking fake one) doesn't move my scare needle. The odds of getting attacked by a masked psycho hiding in your bath tub are, what, about one in six? Maybe one in four if you're a college-age girl, but there's never been a movie about a masked killer waiting in a tub. Not one! Possessed fetuses, now there's a horror for you. What's scary about Jaws?

Bait you? Answer, don't, take pro, take con, share Jaws putting your nickers in a twist, share it doing nothing for you, like it does me, pass by, flame me, an do as thou wilt, but to call that post bait?  :bouncegiggle: If a movie question is bait on a site called Bad MOVIES, boy, bait must be all over the place here.

I asked because it's something I never understood, how Jaws ever scared anyone. Alpha and omega. Coda. End of line. Shrug.

Except for that one underwater scene with the sunken boat I didn't find Jaws scary.

Still a good as an adventure film tho.

Always wondered how the shark bit that guy's head and upper chest off but left them on the boat...

Some trivia, it is widely accepted that the theme to jaws was heavily inspired by the theme from "the doomsday machine" episode of star trek. They both used 4 deep, heavy ominous notes, the ones in jaws were slightly differently timed.

One thing to remember is that in 1977 that shark was not cheesey or fake looking.  It was the most realistic shark ever recorded on film that WASN'T real. I was too young to go see it in the theaters, but yes, it scared the liver out of a LOT of people!

that's true. I mean judging bruce by today's standards is like judging original godzilla by today;s standards.

JAWS scared me when it was new, I saw it in a movie theater, I was very young.  I've seen it numerous times since, and I don't need to own it.  I like it.  I think it's a very good movie.  I think once a movie's scared you it can't scare you a second time.

It scared the sh!t out of me when I saw it in the big screen when it was new. I still think it's a wonderful film that that holds up very well today.

In fact, I went with my friend Mike Grimm, and I tore up my ticket stub because I was shaking so bad! Great movie to see on the big screen!

yes it totally scared me. maybe partly due to my fear of being in the sea?

one of my earliest memories was being in the sea (with armbands on) with my dad, and hearing my dad point out there were fish swimming around (which I couldn't see), and suddenly I was scared out of my mind. that formative scare has stuck with me ever since, I think. still whenever I watch JAWS I feel that fear, but the film is an absolute masterpiece IMO, regardless of all that...

last year I went in the sea for the first time since I was about 10 years old, doing a course in paddle-boarding. we ended up having to go way out (maybe 200+ meters) on these boards, and the sea underneath just looked black. I was scared the whole time I was going to get munched. but the thing is we don't really get sharks in england... or so I thought, because what news story should I see the week after my paddle-boarding adventure, in pretty much the *exact* spot I had been in?

I think he saw a use for an amusing meme... I expect he was kidding you.  It's an interesting topic.

That is correct. I thought the meme was perfect for this.

I don't really remember Jaws scarring me that much the first time I saw it.  But then again, I actually saw some of the sequels first.  If I remember correctly, Jaws 3D was my actual introduction to the series.

That being said, when I did eventually see it, I enjoyed it.  Maybe not in the proper way, but I got its use of tension. It had likable characters.  I enjoyed it.

The author, Peter Benchley,  eventually regretted ever writing the book.  It plays a major role in why people are more afraid of sharks today, then say over a hundred years ago.  He spent the rest of his life working with organizations like the WWF (World Wildlife Federation) to try to protect sharks.
At least, that's what Gary Busey told me...
