I love bats and have put four bat boxes up in our woods so we've got some good colonies going, but in all seriousness, if they're in your attic you should get them out because their dropping can spread histoplasmosis and blastomycosis and other diseases. Usually depriving bats of where they roost is enough to inspire relocation.

We don't use the attic. All that's up there is sawdust and empty walnut shells from the squirrels. And we live in a very swampy area, so the bats kill all the mosquitos that swarm around this town all summer long- so I'll keep the bats and take my chances.
