The best example I can think of this is Superman Returns for Brandon Routh.

People say Fair Game (1995) was supposed to launch the acting career for model Cindy Crawford. The movie flopped and Crawford was nominated for razzies.
However, Crawford claims she never had any ambitions to be an actress. It was producer Joel Silver who pursued her, offering her an insane amount of money she couldn't refuse, even though she told Silver many times that she couldn't act but he insisted.

Battleships and John Carter of Mars was a one-two combo that few actors careers could survive. Taylor Kitsch may never be the same.

Errol Flynn tried to make  17 year old Beverly Aadland a movie star in CUBAN REBEL GIRLS.
Needless to say, it didn't work.

I remember Cutthroat Island was supposed to be a big deal, but most people don't even remember it.

Also, one weird one is Avatar.  It made more money at the box office than any movie ever, but ... name one character from it.  Quote one line of dialogue.  Nobody remembers anything about the movie.  It left no impression at all on pop culture.

I still haven't seen it. I remember mentioning that to someone and all he could say was, "It's awesome you should see it." I also remember walking through the supermarket and hearing one of those hype ads for the movie. One that usually has all the iconic lines and what have you. Nothing stuck out. I was just like, "What is this an ad for? Oh the biggest movie ever?" I thought it was just me, but really outside of Disney building a huge monument to it, it doesn't get as much attention as you'd expect.

This was the first guy I thought of. I hope he fired his agent after that double-whammy! :D

At the height of his Smallville popularity, Tom Welling did The Fog (2005) including a gratuitous shirtless scene, but the film was still a flop.

You should hear the director's commentary for the shower scene.

This is particularly disappointing because I like John Carter.

Just about any big movie they put Sam Worthington seemed like them pushing him to be the next real big deal.  Terminator: Salvation, Avatar, Clash of the Titans etc. But he really never took off.  Feels like he got replaced by Tom Hardy.  Because I could have seen Sam as the main actor in Mad Max: Fury Road and Venom.  I'm kind of glad he didn't get them-but I could see him playing them.
At least, that's what Gary Busey told me...

The Burgomaster

Michael Chiklis as John Belushi in WIRED. A box office failure and one of the worst movies I've sever seen.
