SATANIS: THE DEVIL'S MASS (1970)

This documentary was on TCM Underground last night at 2am.  Everyone who was interviewed about ANTON LaVAY's Church of Satan stumbled over their words uh, uh, uhm... Interviewees included LaVay himself, members of the "church," neighbors and critics of the "church".  We get to watch a man in a silly costume lower his pants, lay down, and then has his flabby stretchmarked arse beaten.  Then he climbs into a coffin with a nude woman and members close the lid.  I assume they let them out.  We get to see several unattractive altar-seated nude women with strategically placed skulls between their legs.  The film was LaVAY's opportunity to explain and describe his "religion".  You know.  Uhm, uh, y'know...    Talk about DUMB!

It is a Something Weird video.

Is this the same movie titled WITCHCRAFT '70 under a different title?
Supernatural?...perhaps. Baloney?...Perhaps not!" Bela Lugosi-the BLACK CAT (1934)
Interviewer-"Does Dracula ever end for you?
Lugosi-"No. Dracula-never ends."

I think they're different films, but I guess ANTON LaVAY and his wife are in WITCHCRAFT '70

I don't know about LaVay's wife, whether she is in it or not, but he is.

That goes without saying.
Most of what LeVay was doing was making money off the suckers. He was the P.T. Barnum of...idiots I guess.

LaVAY was indeed a charlatan, liar, fraud.  The poor thing died in 1997.

He was in it not because he was a devil worshipper- he was a showman who made money off the suckers.
He was a sideshow huckster. And most folks who went to his Church of Satan in San Francisco were there for the sex and drugs. They didn't worship Satan. It was a fad. Jayne Mansfield hung out there!  It was the place to be in 1968-69 for hippies.
The only folks who take this carnival nonsense serious are mentally ill.

Not-So-Fun Fact:
Susan Atkins worked there as a topless dancer before she meet Charlie!

Of course, most of what you see in these 2 films is not real documentary footage. It's all staged. It's a movie made by hucksters. Like the FACES OF DEATH thing. They're exploitation movies. I enjoy them!

EDIT:

Wow! I just watched the trailer-I need to see this!

And even in the trailer you can hear LaVay: uh... uh... uh...  Plus, that 30 second trailer is better than the whole "movie".  It's boring.

It was a strange time for pop culture in the late 60's and early 70's... occult s**t was real big back then.
ROSEMARY'S BABY, the EXORCIST, everything was Satan this and Satan that. Alistair Crowley was more popular in 1970 than he was when he was alive.

I think JIMMY PAGE bought one of Aleister Crowley's estates.  More silliness.
