I never understood the "Promo Only" on some music videos in the 1980s. They made music videos to promote the artist and their music, right? For example, White Lion's music video for "Wait" had a "Promo Only" disclaimer, yet the single was available everywhere for purchase. So what was the point?

I used to deal quite a bit with record companies here in the early 1990s and a lot of the vinyls and tapes we got had PROMO ONLY labels on them: I asked about them and was told they were not for sale and were slightly different to the release versions, leaving me more confused than normal.

I used to have Imported "Promo Only" 12-Inch vinyls from the U.S. They didn't differ from the regular or album versions. Beside vinyls I know record labels in America served radio stations "Promo Only" cassette tapes including 3-5 songs from an Album. Radio DJs would give each song a 15 second listen and then decide which one to play. That sort of made sense.

Maybe it's so the people who get the promotional copies won't resell them for a profit. Like how all the screeners I get from studios are watermarked and contain notices saying things like "for review only."

With a time machine, I might try to keep a search engine monopoly from forming. Convince excite to buy Google. That way Google would've been shut down when excite@Home went bankrupt, & we'd...have a search engine monopoly owned by Inktomi.

Rats.

Steal google's code and form a company before they do. If ya can't beat them, take their idea.
No need to steal it; they posted their page-rank algorithm online: http://infolab.stanford.edu/~backrub/google.html

They didn't even own it; they developed it as a project for graduate school, & till a few years ago ther were still paying Stanford royalties.

Of course you can't just take the original paper, implement it, & have your own Google; they've got about 20 years of development on you.

Did you forget about your time machine? You'd be using it before they'd even started.

If you started referring to anti-vaxxers and Antiva, you'd cause some serious confusion.

Why would you quit over 2 rich guys who shot there parents?
They were not children when they shot them. They were adults.
