I considered going to see a screening of AKIRA last night - presumably the "restored" version you mention. I'd be sad to see "the shortcuts in the animation become more visible". I'm surprised that's a Thing but frankly HD has done no favors to many beloved spectacles from my childhood. I made the mistake of watching part of ALIENS in HD at some point. Cameron simply didn't mean for us to see all the detail in all the deep shadows... 

But every time I've ever revisited AKIRA I'm still impressed. The attention to detail and the character animation is impeccable. Maybe I'll stick to my old VHS in perpetuity.
