The Wanderer, by Johnny Cash and U2. Mister Cash, U2….hey, who needs more than that? A solid song for the ages.

Tubthumping, by Chumbawamba. This frenzied song about being wasted-drunk was everywhere in the late ‘90s…then the band was never heard from again. The girl in the video has the most striking blue eyes….

Being Boring, by Pet Shop Boys. This song reminds me of someone I know.

Santeria, by Sublime. Brad Newell overdosed just before this video was shot. He knew his drug use was a terminal disease and always told his friends not to be sad when he went, just celebrate the good times, so when he died the band got together and made this goofy video instead of a sad one.

How’s It Gonna Be, by Third-Eye Blind. Around the turn of the century I knew a man who loved this song, and he told me it was about a selfish man realizing he’s ruined his perfect relationship, and for maybe the only time in his life he stops to think beyond himself to wonder how it’s gonna be “when you don’t know me anymore” and just what’s coming when the end arrives, since he’s royally mangled what he and the unnamed woman once shared.

Buddy Holly, by Weezer. A good song and a Forrest-Gump-ish video that blew all our minds in 1994. Really, people squealed when this video came on, and chins hit chests. Incidentally, the singer quit the band for a while to go to Harvard!

Julia, by The Beatles.  John Lennon's haunting ode to his dysfunctional mother is a masterpiece. Music probably doesn't get much more personal than this.

So What, Miles Davis. Nevermind the elitist snobbery, "Oh, everybody likes that!!" this is great music!

Dead Souls, Joy Division. This song is a favorite of mine. It's also Chestertonian, because there's a paradox in it being simple and complex at the same time.

Happy to help!

Sort of a novelty, a serious ballad tribute to Tiny Tim, "the Johnny Rotten of folk rock."

Streets of Your Town, by Go Betweens. Tricky little tune that says more in the lyrics than the deceptively perky music would make you think it does.
