Actor Anthony James has Died at Age 77

Character actor Anthony James, known for playing a whole host of creepy roles throughout his career, has passed away from cancer. He was 77 years old.

James’s career as an actor began with an appearance on the television show “T.H.E. Cat” in 1966 opposite Robert Loggia. The following year, he found himself in the Academy Award nominated In the Heat of the Night opposite Sidney Poitier. He would continue acting until 1992, when he appeared in Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven.

James had a knack for playing dark, morally grey characters, and horror fans will no doubt remember him in 1976’s Burnt Offerings. Though he appears only briefly in the film as a chauffeur, there was something undeniably menacing in the way he simply stood still or moved that crept under the skin of viewers and left a lasting impression.

He would play a similar though larger role two years later in 1978’s Return from Witch Mountain opposite Bette Davis.

James retired from acting in 1992 and focused on his art and his writing. His paintings were exhibited in major galleries across the country, and he published both poetry and a memoir titled Acting My Face in 2014.

Apparently I own five movies with Anthony James in it:

Blue Thunder (1983)
The Naked Gun 2˝: The Smell of Fear (1991)
Burnt Offerings (1976)
The Teacher (1974)
Nightmares (1983)

He is a familiar face once you see him but I didn't know who he was based on his name alone. R.I.P.
