I'm thinking about writing a second book which will have this quote as a title: it's an exploration of what I like to call the "anti-South African film movement" and the people who made movies which gave the middle finger to my country.

First things first: I have no problem with them attacking apartheid at all - the apartheid laws were on a par with other inhumane laws of the 20th century so those can be attacked, no problem.

The films (and directors) I'm planning to discuss are:

Dilemma (aka A World Of Strangers) (1963: Henning Carlsen)
The Wilby Conspiracy (1974: Ralph Nelson)
Cry Freedom (1987: Richard Attenborough)
A World Apart (1988: Chris Menges)
Lethal Weapon 2 (1989: Richard Donner)
A Dry White Season (1989: Euzhan Palcy)
Catch A Fire (2006: Phillp Noyce)

I must add that Ralph Nelson and Phillip Noyce also made films about persecution of minorities and horrible laws in their own countries (Soldier Blue and Rabbit Proof Fence).

I think it’s a great idea and it would certainly shed more light on the subject, that folks should not bear a grudge by associating policy with nationalism. Not all Germans were Nazis, not all Chinese are communists, not all Americans are slave-condoning liberal Democrat/Confederate scum, etc. I had always wondered why folks who had associated South Africa with apartheid were not also associating Nelson Mandela with the necklacing practice that his activist wife condoned as well: “ With our boxes of matches, and our necklaces, we shall liberate this country.” - Winnie Mandela (1986)
