Retiring at age forty-two seems great beforehand because it leaves you with the entire second act of life still ahead. But then you realize the playwright hasn't written the second act, and you've been improvising your lines since the door closed behind you, and you can't go back in anymore. So you wash off the makeup and shake their last style out of your hair and you look in the mirror at this stranger you're suddenly meeting, and you think, "What now?"

Get coked-up, have a threesome with a stripper, kill a hobo for kicks.

Can the hobo and the stripper be the same person?
What does not kill me makes me stranger.

No, because the stripper hobo might be me when I'm unemployed in March and have to take up stripper hoboing to provide for my family.  I don't think I'll quite be ready to die yet, but the list of things I would do for 20 bucks might get much longer.

Plan an adventure!  Solve mysteries! Did you know you can make baskets out of pine needles?   There's a youtube video on it.  I think I'm going to do that too – I'll be a basket weaving stripper hobo.  I may not be able to do all the moves the other strippers can do, but I bet you haven't seen a stripper on a freight train with super cute hand woven pine needle basket top grass tasseled pasties.

Remember, remember the fifth of November, when a benighted bunch of Catholic fundamentalists tried to murder the English government and bring the brutality of the Inquisition to the land, somehow inspiring modern-day revolutionary hobbyists who say they want social equality for all. Try 'n connect those far-flung dots, eh....

Seems pretty useless.
All of it.
All religion seems competitive and useless. Or dangerous.

I often feel it was a shame they didn't succeed. Not that I agree with their beliefs or aims, but sometimes I do feel that the country would be better off without Parliament.

Well, I have dug up or helped dig mammoth, mastodon, bison, a Pleistocene musk ox, mosasaur, plesiosaur, xiphactinus (a 16-foot tarpon-like fish), and an ancient sea turtle.
Now I can say I have helped dig up a giant ground sloth!

Three Friday night thoughts.....

I once asked an expert on the subject what I'd be like on cocaine, and he said, "Frightening."

Religion is a finger pointing at the moon, not the moon. (Though which finger varies.)

It broke my heart to find out the best compliment ever---she's never bored because she's never boring----was lifted without credit from The Pet Shop Boys.

The frost was so thick when I got up this morning in the pre-dawn it looked like grass had been replaced by sauerkraut.

I found out that a version of Monopoly, based on the Bible exists (Bibleopoly). I wonder how much Sodom and Gomorrah are worth?

The Towles novel reminded me of something Fitzgerald may have written had he lived into his fifties. You should read it when you're in "Miami."

Have a copy. If that one's like ours, it's a co-operative game where you have to trade with players to form a certain number of churches. (Going by memory.)
