The Shadowed Mind (1988)

This is one of the very few outright horror films made in South Africa and certainly one of the most disturbing (and best): it was banned for many years and has almost never had a proper theater run here. This is also the film I found earlier in the year when no one else could.  

The best way to describe this film – a truly frightening tale of an insane asylum for the super deviant / super rich and the psycho killer in their midst – is possibly Jannie Totsiens on acid, as it takes what Jans Rautenbach could do no more than suggest then and shows it and then some. A woman – with a penchant for baring her breasts at almost every opportunity - is admitted to a strange asylum with even stranger inmates – her arrival almost coincides with two major problems for the asylum: one, its' director is desperately searching for much needed funding and some of the inmates are getting themselves brutally slaughtered (one un-nerving murder shows a person in a shower getting his penis sliced off) and no trace of the insane killer. Visually striking with a prowling camera, a nerve-jangling sound effects track and long banned under the old, repressive Publications Control Board's film destroying culture criteria of "this film has merit but...", the film is certainly director Cedric Sundstrom's best to date. Starring Adrienne Pearce, Rufus Swart and Towje Kleiner.
