When you'd rather not get into the discussion your answer is sure to launch, is there a polite way to field the question: "What are you reading?"

These days, the polite answer is: "Pardon me.  I gotta go to the bathroom..."
Ha! I guess that works. It updates Patrick Bateman's "I gotta return some video tapes."

*Sigh* I told a young woman yesterday who was wearing an 'Alien' tee shirt that it was one of my favourite movies, and one of the first films I had watched on VHS. She asked me what VHS was?

I remember about 5 years ago I was screening a film at an arts festival on 16mm with two new projectors: someone asked me "what kind of video is that?"  :buggedout:

Is it acceptable to crash a stranger's funeral as long as you conduct yourself with approximate decorum and don't stay for free booze at the wake?

Why would you want to crash a funeral? Because where else can you wear a black veil in a church and get stared at for the right reasons?

(Funeral pickups are a thing....)

Gotta admit, it sounds a bit weird.

ER

So it'd be really out of bounds to show up at a funeral and claim the deceased got you pregnant just before he died? Right?

If you won the lottery, would you take less money up front, or more money spread out over twenty years?

Me, I don't trust the future, so I'd take my winnings now.

I know someone whose rabbi says unless Jews forgive Nazis, they are letting Nazis hurt them through their legacy of continued hate. What do you think of that concept?

PS This was the same rabbi who told Jewish parents to tell their children that since Jews stand for justice, fairness, and forgiveness, it was natural for Nazis to hate them, since Nazis stood for the exact opposite things, and as far as explanations go, I always felt a fondness for that one.

They can forgive them if they want, as long as we never forget.

I do not think anyone wants to forgive.  It is not easy to forgive.  There is a measure of control in forgiveness which is wisdom.
Some crimes are to me forever unforgivable.  I suspect I would fail.

If that's what they want to do, who cares?

How come most of the great rock bands have been British?

Not sure but The Moody Blues have always been my favourite band.
