I dunno if they still do this, but in the mid-90s the US armed forces (all 4 branches) had some kind of list of all young American men who were about to turn 18 and/or graduate high school. I was both and they started calling my house via landline in a time before real caller ID tech. I'd received a few such calls urging me to enlist in the Army, Navy, or AF when I got one from a pushy Marine recruiter and snaaaapped.

"Why do you think you're not cut out to be a Marine, son?" he asked.

"Because I've seen FULL METAL JACKET and I know I would end up exactly like Private Pyle."

They obviously had a well-annotated database and all took it seriously. I say that 'cause the dude thanked me, hung up, and I never received another phone call from recruiters after that.
