Fan theories are so much fun, and many of them are plausible.

A fan theory which turned out to be accurate was the scifi action movie Soldier (1998) being set in the same universe as Alien (1979-now), Blade Runner (1982) and even Joss Whedon's series Firefly.

Some of my favourites include:

The Joker in The Dark Knight (2008) was a former specops or black ops soldier, due to his knowledge of weapons and tactics, and his reference to a truckload of soldiers being blown up in Iraq.

Total Recall (1990) - the entire movie is a memory implant. This was later confirmed by the director in the director's commentary, and if you watch Total Recall with the idea that everything is a memory implant, it makes complete sense. But this article points out factors that suggest it wasn't.

His theories include the ideas that Jason in Friday the 13th is a disabled boy and the movies are his dreams/hallucinations/fantasies; that the Creeper in Jeepers Creepers is actually a Predator; and that Helena Bonham-Carter's character in Fight Club doesn't exist either, she is another personality of Edward Norton/The Narrator just like Tyler Durden.

AWESOME new thread which I will probably tread lightly in to avoid spoilers  :bouncegiggle: and perhaps decline to contribute to....... though goodness knows I have no shortage of lunatic theories about movies that Conventional Wisdom has declared Solved.......

I don't even like the movie, but I've heard a theory about The Blair Witch Project that suggests there was nothing supernatural going on.  Mike and Josh set the whole thing up to kill Heather.

To copy from another site...

The theory says the real killers in The Blair Witch Project were Mike and Josh, who agreed to make the documentary with Heather only so they could kill her. In this way, they created all the creepy noises and moments themselves and passed them off as being the witch to keep Heather invested.

Some evidence backing this up is the fact that Heather never knew Mike before the documentary, the plausibility that Mike and Josh set out ritualistic items outside their campsite while Heather slept, and the fact that Josh disappeared during their discovery of the murder house and Mike led Heather in before she was killed.

One of my faves is that Sandy in Grease drowned after not being rescued by Danny and the whole film is her pre death dream. It also goes on to say that the car flying away at the end is her and Danny flying up to heaven.

The events of Stranger Things aren't really happening, and it's just the main characters having one really long campaign in Dungeons and Dragons.

Kevin McCallister from Home Alone grows up to be the Jigsaw Killer from the Saw series.

Personally, I've always thought the "it's all a dream" theories were lazy, unless your movie is specifically about dreams, or something similar.

The Total Recall theory makes sense, because you're directly referencing something that's actually a part of the plot.

zombie no.one

honestly never had a 'theory' about any movie... so let me invent one:

*The reason Pee Wee wanted his bike back so bad is because it had a stash of cocaine hidden in the seat

The events of the Harry Potter films don't happen. It's all just some kind of fever dream from abuse he suffered from his horrible foster parents as he's sleeping in the pantry under the stairs. His "mark" on his head is a lump/cut inflicted by the family

My fan theory is that ET is actually supposed to be Jesus.

When he gets to Earth, no one knows or realizes who he really is.
His Earth Mother's name is Mary.
He has one true disciple in Elliott.
He performs miracles (of a kind)
He is persecuted.
He dies.
He is resurrected.
He disappears again into the heavens.
