ah, that one did cross my mind... then I decided I was probably confusing it with THE INITIATION OF SARAH

If by "universe" we mean simply "genre", then all of these are fine.

ZNO, you are correct, GATES OF HELL does seem related to THE BEYOND and the other films, though a little more uncertainly. (I only watched it once and it made little sense to me.) In spite of it being seen as part of the trilogy, HOUSE BY THE CEMETARY has no, no relationship to THE BEYOND or GATES OF HELL - it's about an undead mutant mad scientist hiding in a basement. There is communication between the worlds of the living and the dead (ghosts) and a character crosses over at the end, but there's no hidden portal to aitch-ee-double-hockey sticks.

SUSPIRIA, INFERNO, and MOTHER OF TEARS are an Official trilogy - nominally about a coven of immortal witches (or something). That concept introduced in SUSPIRIA (which has no portal to the underworld) is referred to sort of indirectly in INFERNO (which has a portal to the underworld but no witches, really - I mean I dunno exactly what's going on in INFERNO, it is bloody wicked cool, though). I cringe to admit I never watched MOTHER OF TEARS, so I'll trust you on that.
