Maybe these aren't the greatest comedies, but they all made me laugh quite a bit.

Porky's
Airplane
History of the World, Part 1
Liar, Liar
Spaced Invaders

Sydus

Why hasn't blazing saddles been mentioned?

The system is down

Desslar

Geez, only 5?  That's tough.

In on particular order:

Monty Python and the Holy Grail
The absolute king of comedy.  No end of hilariously quotable lines.

Duck Soup
As another said, I had to have one Marx film in here.  There are several great ones, but the raw insanity of this one makes it perhaps a cut above.

Naked Gun
Best spoof film ever (sorry Airplane!).

Liar Liar
Jim Carrey at his best with an Oscar worthy job of nonstop mugging.

I'm Gonna Git You Sucka
Another of the top spoof films, and one that gets no respect.

I would have included the fantastic Fish Called Wanda, but John Cleese was already represented on the list.

Eirik

Seems most people throw in a Monty Python.  Am I the only one who didn't think Holy Grail was their funniest movie?  I thought it was DAMN funny, but Meaning of Life and Something Completely Different made me laugh harder and never dragged like Grail did at times.

trekgeezer

The deal with Holy Grail is that almost  every line in the thing is quotable, something very few movies can lay  claim too.

It's the injustice inherent in the system.  What else can I say ?

And you thought Trek isn't cool.

raj

That's "violence inherent in the system"  Damn peasant (ooh, that's telling)

The only thing I don't like about Grail is the ending;  I suppose Life is more consistent in that regard, but you're right trek, Grail has so much quotable stuff in it.

trekgeezer

Leave it to me to screw up quote from a movie I've seen a thousand times.

And you thought Trek isn't cool.

raj

It's just an excuse to see it again.

Bernie

I would've agreed with Holy Grail if I hadn't recently purchased and rewatched Life of Brian for the first time in years.

Damn, that's funny.

For really consistent laughs, I could list any number of MST episodes, but would that be a movie or a TV show?  TV, I guess, that uses movies for its "raw material."

Evil Matt

Nobody mentioned "This is Spinal Tap"?  Damn.  That's tied at #1 with Holy Grail for me.

Everything's funnier with monkeys.

Plan 9 from outer space is also one of the greatest comedies man has every made! Support plan 9! :P

Muahahahaha

Glad somebody in all these Python posts finally mentioned Life of Brian. Of all the Python films, Holy Grail is probably the funniest, but Brian is a close second for me.

As for my own list, I can only say that I don't do well with picking all-time favourites in such a broad genre. There are just so many possibilities. Don't make me choose!

The short answer would be that any list I'd come up with off the top of my head would probably include movies already mentioned in this thread. Although, Smokey and the Bandit hasn't been mentioned yet. I love that movie.

What the hell, here goes, in no particular order:

Holy Grail
Smokey and the Bandit
Airplane!
Blazing Saddles
It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World

And honourable mentions to more movies than I'd care to list.

"Join me in the abyss of savings."

SolarEquinox

In no particular order:

The Producers

Young Frankenstein

Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Airplane

Ummm...well, not to overdo the whole Mel Brooks thing, but Blazing Saddles is pretty good...oh, and Dumb and Dumber is pretty high up there too.
