80's Comet/Sun Flare B Movie

Hi, I am trying to find out the name of a B moive and hope someone can help me.

It was about a family traveling cross the country to the grandmothers house on the coast in a station wagon, and they had to look away from sun flares or comets or something like that, or they turned to dust.  I remember a scene where they were in a grocery store getting food and there were rabid dogs or wolves outside.   I don't have much info on it, but it's driving me nuts.

This probably isn't right, but Night of The Comet sounds similar.  Not sure about the cross-country trip though.

Nope, not Night Of The Comet.  Didn't have the whole station wagon thing.


I doubt this is right either, but could it be The Day After?

There was a movie, I believe in the '70s, where there was some comet or something and people turned to dust.  Can't remember the name, so I guess I'm no help.
