Brother, I wouldn't dream of getting rid of my VCR.  I'll probably buy another one to keep as a standby sometime in the future, and I take good care of the one I have.

I don't think I'll ever get rid of mine but I already have DVD recording capability as will more and more people over the next few years.

True, however they're still not as flexible as a VCR. DVD-Rs can't be erased and if they have DVD-RWs, I'm sure they're more expensive than your average video tape.

Also, I'm not an expert, but I've been hearing rumors that the new digital recorders and DVD recorders will be including some form of DRM (Digital Rights Mangling) to prevent people from recording TV shows and posting them or sharing them with others.

Netflix is awesome. They have all of Lucio Fulci's Horror classics. Nuff said...

i subscribe as well. i live in a small conservative town (culture shock after chicago) and would never get to see such cinematic genius as GG allen smearin kaka all over himself and trying to get a cab...

still, what are we gonna do about movies that are released censored on dvd as opposed to the vhs releases---like the EVIL ED i mentioned? i would love to start a business and buy rights to classics that will never see the dvd light of day and release them.

for a while i bounced around a lot of chicago suburbs that didn't have independent video retailers...so if i wanted the uncensored version of say REQUIEM FOR A DREAM, schockbuster and bollywood video be damned, thank god for NETFLIX---the D*ld* scene was enlightening. plus the NETFLIX reduced their 3 at a time price!!!!!!!

I agree, Netflix has got to be the best yet. Their selection keeps me coming back for more. "Damn, I sound like a stupid commercial."

Anyhow, independents are the best in my opinion. They usually make serious leaps and bounds that studios wouldn't dare to make.

Except that it won't even let you view the site if you don't pass their broadband test. Also, according to their brief list of "advantages" they only let you download DRM (Digital Rights Mangled) files, probably in WMV (Windows Mangled Video) format, which expires after a set period of time, can't be copied, can't be moved to another system, probably can't be bought to own. BLECH!
