THE ISLAND (2005) - The movie starts out very interesting and I was really into it till one of the main plot twist is revealed. It has a great look and subject matter that reminded me of THX 1138 (1971) and other films about future society. Usually I really like these type films. This one wasn't bad, but lost my interest half way through.

LAYER CAKE (2004) - Couldn't get into this film with the foul mouthed British actors. I think it is the same reason that I didn't like DOG SOLDIERS (2002) and 28 DAYS LATER (2002) . British actors must eithier be funny or intelligent and dignified. Something about British using foul language dosn'et work for me. Sorry folks give me real layer cake any day.

haha, yeah some friends and i always thought the Young Ones was an entertaining British show just for the reason of trying to count how many times Rick Mayall says 'p**s off' in one episode.

At last, I find someone else that didn't particularly like Dog Soldiers.
I was bored s**tless throughout it and couldn't get into the story at all.

As for "The Island"...
I liked it and give it 3 out of 4 stars.

On a side note:
I am firmly convinced that Michael Bay has Attention Deficit Disorder.
In the first half of "The Island"...Bay is on his meds.
The 2nd half...they wore off.

Hehe, I agree on the Bay theme. that man needs serious medication. I also thought "Dog soldiers" was merely OK, but since Neil Marshall's last movie, "The Descent" is great I may even watch it again.

I loved "Layer Cake", though. It's a huge improvement over the british thrillers we've seen lately (most done by that guy who married Madonna) and Daniel Craig is fantastic.
Due to the horrifying nature of this film, no one will be admitted to the theatre.

MIchael Bay is a commercial director. He needs to stick with car commercials and music videos and the likes for his swooping crane and helicopter shots and quick editing. It's hard to keep concentrating on his movies when we are being bombarded by so many images at a breakneck speed. I didn't like The Island for that very reason. I mean, does the camera really need to swoop through a giant falling "R"  to get a better sense of the scene? Give me a break.

I really enjoyed The Island.  I can't help it, the film was just fun for me.  It was loud, it was stupid, flashy and a lot of fun.  Plot holes abounded, but isn't that why we love these stupid bad movies?

Layer Cake was the absolute opposite for me.  It's a fairly slow film, very in depth and is one of the best British gangster flicks.  XXXX is one of the best characters in modern cinema, and I fell in love with the character from the first moment.  Nevermind the amazing supporting cast/characters.  The scene with the bodyguard beating his old chum is perfect.  Matthew Vaughn.....I can't wait to see what is next.

The Island...going on what I know about this movie, I could have sworn they mocked something similar on an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000 - I think that movie was called "Clonus" or something.  That was hilarious, and the reason I can't bring myself to watch the Island yet.  I can't imagine what Michael Bay could do to something halfway interesting.

Amanda,

Yep, you are thinking of The Clonus Horror that was released in the late 70s.  The makers of that film actually sued Bay over The Island....I'm not sure what the end result was though.

Whether you liked or disliked "Layer Cake," and I have yet to see it, when you look at Daniel Craig in it, then you are looking at the next James Bond.

Amanda

I normally b***h about frivolous lawsuits, but really.  That one was probably warranted.

Aiieee!!
Both Dog Soldiers and 28 Days Later were great pictures!!
Both my wife and I were riveted through both of them -- especially Dog Soldiers.
For God's sake, if you disliked those pictures, then avoid The Bunker at all costs, as it also was an intelligent, low-budget film that relied on character exposition to deliver the goods.
And it was British . . .
What, for the love of Pete, do you, as a board cruiser, dislike about a werewolf tearing off a guy's head and slamming it into a car's windshield?
Ain't this what we're all about?
As for 28 Days:  The Day of the Triffids with zombies this time!!  I mean, please . . .
* * * *
Oh, well  . . . to each their own . . .

I have no idea what this means.
