I know lots of folks don't watch silent movies. But if you do- what do you consider the best?
For me- and this is in no real order.
1. SAFETY LAST (1923) with Harold Llyod.
The clock scene, of course, is classic.
http://youtu.be/VFBYJNAapyk (http://youtu.be/VFBYJNAapyk)
It's like Keaton mixed with Hitchcock.
BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN (1925)
THE GENERAL (1926)
THE KID (1921)
THE GOLD RUSH (1925)
BROKEN BLOSSOMS (1919)
7) The Phantom of the Opera.
8. PANDORA'S BOX (1929)
This movie is...I can't explain it. It oozes despair and sex.
With the stunning Louise Brooks. I dare anyone to show me any actress who is this sexy and cool...and you never hear her voice. She is dangerous.
(https://i.imgur.com/BtypaR4.jpg) (https://lunapic.com)
I doubt I've seen 100 silent movies... I'd guess it's closer to 50 or so. But if we're making a list then one of my all-time favorites,
9. THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI (1920)
^ I'm certain I haven't either. But we can give it the ol' BAD movies try!
10. the GOLEM (1920)
Though a 1914 version once existed, only snippets remain now.
The 1920 version is a beautiful watch. The Karl Freund cinematography is stunning.

11 Nosfertu (1922)
^ I knew that was coming up soon! And well it should!
A film that is 100 years old and still gives folks the willies? Classic.

OK- I'm going to try and keep track of what's going on. I usually fail.
1. SAFETY LAST (1923)
2.BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN (1925)
3. THE GENERAL (1926)
4.THE KID (1921)
5.THE GOLD RUSH (1925)
6. BROKEN BLOSSOMS (1919)
7. PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (1925)
8. PANDORA'S BOX (1929)
9. the CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI (1920)
10. the GOLEM (1920)
11. NOSFERATU (1922)
I'm not surprised that comedy and horror is the most beloved genres of silent film. It was all visual. Beyond some guy playing a rinky-dink piano.
Dramas need a plot. Slapstick needs a guy falling on his ass and horror needs a "BOO!"
12. DR.MABUSE,THE GAMBLER (1922)
Fritz (METROPLIS) Lang's take on the 'Master Villain' ( which had already been done in serials like FANTOMAS and such).
So outrageous only Lang could have done it so beautiful and grimy at the same time. The birth of film noir, I think.
I saw it on PBS in the mid 70's, on a small black and white TV late at night. Perfect.

13. SUNRISE: A SONG OF TWO HUMANS (1927)
^ A beautiful movie.
It's a shame Murnau died so young. It's like Lon Chaney. Or James Dean. How much more they had to give was gone too soon.
14. Harold Shaw's De Voortrekkers [The Pathfinders, 1916]
One of the few surviving South African silent films. What remains of it can be seen here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1yDtedt2iw (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1yDtedt2iw)
I'm not sure who the idiot was who added sound to it.

I find it always amazing how a film, or an artist, even almost 100 years later, still is there.
Bob Kane's Joker. To the 1966 BATMAN TV show (my favorite Batman on film), to all the Joker's in all the new stuff.
It is amazing.
Except in the film, the scary looking guy- Gwynplaine- is not a villain.

31. HAXAN (1922) aka WITCHCRAFT THROUGH THE AGES
Quasi- doc about the history of witchcraft.
Words can't describe how weird this film is.
I first saw it on PBS uhf channel 34 in about 1973. About the year I discovered Black Sabbath and Led Zep thanks to my older brother Mike.

That's the first one I've posted that I can't claim to have seen. I've seen bits, and could have looked at a 4 1/2 hour restored version on TCM like last week. It came on at maybe 1 am... needless to say, I saw none of that. I want to be asleep when the dawn is breaking.
Here's one I've seen:
52.

INTOLERANCE (1915)

^ Are we speaking of the same film? I never seen KING OF KINGS. I wasn't critiquing KING OF KINGS.
I was speaking of BIRTH OF A NATION. Which is an overlong revision of history, of making the Confederacy look like some kind of f**king heros. GONE WITH THE WIND is another. I detest that film.
The only reason I mentioned GREED was it's length. 4 hours is a loooong sit!

I dig it, sorry.
This one I haven't seen :
THE THIEF OF BAGHDAD (1924)
(https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/de/The_Thief_of_Bagdad_%281924%29_-_film_poster.jpg/330px-The_Thief_of_Bagdad_%281924%29_-_film_poster.jpg)
^ I have seen that one! Wonderful!
55. GRANDMA'S BOY (1922)
This movie has a soft spot in my heart. I first seen it on a Sunday morning on some old uhf channel that had 2 hours of Llyod films and shorts.

56) THE PENALTY(1920)

57. A PAGE OF MADNESS (1926)
The only Japanese silent movie I've seen.

^ TCM has shown some silent Japanese films; I think sound was slow to catch on there as the films I saw bits of were mostly 1930s.

61. MYSTERIOUS ISLAND (1929)
One of those critters is Angelo Rossitto!!!!

^ I love the 1960 version and have the soundtrack.
62. NANOOK OF THE NORTH (1922) I've seen it...
63) King Solomon's Mines (1918): footage of this still exists in our archives but it is a real jumble of bad, disjointed and sometimes even reversed images. Seems like someone tried to re-edit the reels and gave up halfway, sadly.
64) THE UNKNOWN(1927)
I was about to post THE UNKNOWN, but instead I'll jump forward in time to

67. DREAM OF A RAREBIT FIEND (1906)

Some of the earliest double-projection effects in movie history, still looks cool today
68. THE WAY OF ALL FLESH (1927) EMIL JANNINGS won the first Academy Award Best Actor Leading Role - LOST FILM!

69. LES VAMPIRES (1915)
No blood drinking- but it has the amazing Musidora as Irma Vip!

Good question. Naming 'lost' films as a favorite...I've been wanting to list LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT (1927), just because of the iconic image of Chaney's shark tooth vampire.
Hallows already did.
If you want to, go ahead. I won't- because I've not seen any lost films.

I've worked on a few that I wish would be lost :buggedout:
70) The Gun Runner (1916): unedited footage in our vaults: probably SA's first real action film.
71) The Rose of Rhodesia (1917): long believed lost but there is a copy in an archive in the Netherlands. I've seen it and it isn't bad (the film I mean, not the archives in the Netherlands )
72) The Voice of The Waters (1918): a very eerie thriller, judging by the pics which still survive.
https://mubi.com/films/the-voice-of-the-waters (https://mubi.com/films/the-voice-of-the-waters)
73. GERTIE THE DINOSAUR (1914)

Most of the films I've posted I've seen, but I indicated if I hadn't seen it. I think the Oscar and star are historically important (effin nazi).
I have seen the little seen remake of
THE WAY OF ALL FLESH (1940) starring
AKIM TAMIROFF. Heartbreaking story.
^ I've not seen either ( of course not the lost version), but the remake stars Akim Tamiroff? I would watch it.

I'd long wondered what the film was titled though I saw it perhaps twice as a child on TV broadcast some Saturday or Sunday afternoon. Years later, I've learned a lot about the
AKIM TAMIROFF and
EMIL JANNINGS versions, but I haven't seen the '40 version in decades. AKIM TAMIROFF is a favorite of mine too!
76) THE AVENGING CONSCIENCE(1914)
77) DOG STAR MAN (1965)
Not even any music.

78. SPARROWS (1926)
Melodrama starring Mary Pickford directed by the man who gave you such classics as BILLY THE KID VS DRACULA and BELA LUGOSI MEETS A BROOKLYN GORILLA, William Beaudine!
(https://i.imgur.com/MCfXaja.jpg) (https://lunapic.com)
The Blue Lagoon (1923): the first filmed version of the classic tale, Sadly lost.
80. the GORILLA (1927)
Murder mystery comedy with a gorilla.
Which has a lost 1930 version, and a 1939 version with the Ritz Brothers and Bela Lugosi!

81)THE ACE OF HEARTS(1921)

82. TWO TARS (1928)
Stan and Ollie star in a non-stop slapstick skit involving a traffic jam.
(https://i.imgur.com/1ls2vg9.jpg) (https://lunapic.com)
http://youtu.be/Ji0rO2rgWq4 (http://youtu.be/Ji0rO2rgWq4)
I think I like Stan and Ollie more than Keaton or Chaplin is because Chaplin added pathos, and later social commentary, and Keaton's stone face left me ...stone faced. Laurel and Hardy just was 100% stupid comedy. And that's what I want out of slapstick.
83. DESTINY (1921)
Supernatural drama directed by Fritz Lang.
Amazing.

"Dream of the rarebit fiend," which I posted earlier, is also based on a Winsor McKay story. I used to have a book of his comics, not sure where it is now, it's either stuffed in a closet somewhere or I gave it away.

They still make silent movies occasionally. Like this classic:
96. BLANCANIEVES (2012)
https://youtu.be/TmQir83IoBE
Snow White set in the world of Spanish bullfighting in the 20s
^ It does look like I would enjoy it.
I'm an artist (ok, a cartoonist), and I like visuals more than narrative.
Do you think I really care if Captain America beats the Red Skull? No. I just want to see Kirby's pencils and Sinnott's inks. The art was amazing.
I feel the same about some films. I don't care what's going on. As long as the visuals are amazing.
97. FLESH AND THE DEVIL (1927)

I would list a Valentino film; but I never sat through one!

98. the PERILS OF PAULINE (1914)

I sat through this a few years ago at TCM:
99.
THE FOUR HORSEMEN OF THE APOCALYPSE (1921) It's the film that made
RUDOLPH VALENTINO a star.
^ I always liked Rex Ingram's work. Valentino had rock star charisma.
The Black Pirate (1926)
Douglas Fairbanks (the original) you can tell did his own stunts.. which were amazing. He made swinging from the ropes and diving look effortless. Plus, it's actually a darned good story that holds up.
