Followed (2018) - ehhh... It's got everything it's supposed to have to be a modern found footage film: decent production values, jerkwad youtube host main guy, spooky location ( an old hotel), and some phoned in attempts at character development and tension, but it just doesn't have "it".

It, I guess, being the sense of adventure to make it memorable.

watchable and decently entertaining in places but just way too formulaic. They do the formula very well but it's still a formula. If that impresses you, you will like this

 3/5

a fair amount of what you might call "acting lapses" as well, where they basically just should have done another take

^ I thought the only "found footage" kinda movies I like are CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST (1980) and the BLAIR WITCH PROJECT (1999).

Dr. Whom

A Whisker Away

A schoolgirl has an unrequited crush. Then she receives a magical mask that transforms her into a cat, so she can be with him incognito. Will she be able to win his heart as a cat? Was the mask seller being completely honest?

After watching My Oni Girl, I realised I had only seen the first ten minutes or so of this one, so I gave it a go. It didn't blow me away, but it is very sweet and charming. In fact, perhaps a bit too sweet and charming for its own good. But is perfectly watchable and if you are looking for a bit of family-friendly entertainment, this fits the bill. One thing I liked is that the magic is not just thrown in just for the fun of it, but is organically linked to the main theme of the movie.
"Once you get past a certain threshold, everyone's problems are the same: fortifying your island and hiding the heat signature from your fusion reactor."

"The Expendables 3" (2014)
After a mission in Somalia goes horribly wrong, Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) disbands his original "Expendables" team and assembles a new squadron of younger, hungrier mercenaries to help him go after a ruthless illegal arms dealer (Mel Gibson) who is a former Expendable himself. Once again, mucho mayhem and destruction ensues.
New additions to the series include Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, Ronda Rousey, Harrison Ford, and many more. Tons of fun for fans of over the top 80s style action flicks.

Rewind or Die!

A group of friends from different countries, that don't seem to like each other, and don't know what countries each other are from decided to get together and break into an abandoned house to spend the week on vacation away from technology.  Once their, they find a VCR and a bunch of old tapes, get the power going again, and watch random clips of public domain movies.

Then they discover that after watching two movies, the VCR will somehow create a third movie combining the two.  We see this when they want a Christmas movie, a Santa movie, and then it "creates" Santa Clause conquers the martians.

Then they get the bright idea to tape one of themselves and see what happens.  The person they taped disappears and get transported into the movie. The others freak out and somehow are in a different movie despite not having actually been in a movie.  This is not explained, but the movie is almost over now so who cares.

The first guy gets killed in his movie by some kind of found footage killer type (the ONLY original "movie" footage shot for this movie.  The others freak out and try to destroy the VCR.  I'm not quite sure what happens and neither is the movie.  One character who left earlier returns now, finds the house empty, only to have one of the other characters that disappeared earlier stagger out of the house and say "I belong here now," before getting sucked back in.

The movie barely has any plot, doesn't really have any likeable characters, and doesn't explain anything.  I see no reason why this exists.  I got this movie at Wal-mart.

"Memoirs of an Invisible Man" (1992)
A lab accident turns a stock broker (Chevy Chase) invisible, forcing him to go on the run from a shady CIA agent (Sam Neill) and his goons, who want to capture and study him.
Director John "Halloween" Carpenter has said that this is the least favorite of his films, due to constant meddling from the studio and him not getting along with Chase or leading lady Daryl Hannah (he later said that Chevy "should be set on fire!") Between that and knowing that the movie was a pretty major box office bomb, I was expecting this to be a train wreck, but surprisingly it's a pretty cool sci-fi action comedy, with decent performances and some cool special effects tricks. Worth checking out.

"Batman" (1989)
The Caped Crusader (Michael Keaton) battles the Joker (Jack Nicholson) for control of Gotham City's streets in Tim Burton's gothic superhero blockbuster that broke box office records and sparked a Bat-Mania craze that sold a million tee shirts. Nicholson steals the show with his scenery-chewing performance, and the set designs, costumes, and Danny Elfman's score still hold up all these years later.
I saw this movie three times (!) during its theatrical run back in the day (it's the only movie I've ever paid to see more than twice) and countless more times since then. 35 years later, it's still essential comic-book nerd viewing and still one of my all time favorites.

The Strange World of José Mojica Marins (2001): Brazilian documentary the Coffin Joe creator's early career in transgressive horror. About what you would expect from this sort of doc---interviews with friends, families, and the man himself--but with long clips of shocking sections of  his films censored in Brazil, and a bizarre (and sad) digression about a bestiality movie (!) the desperate director shot for cash. This finishes up the Coffin Joe box set for me (although I might give AT MIDNIGHT I"LL TAKE YOUR SOUL another stab, it's been awhile). 2.5/5.

THELMA (2024): After being taken for thousands by a phone scammer, 93-year old Thelma sets out to get her money back. Playing out like a slow-motion thriller complete with low-speed chases, this comedy addresses the realities and indignities of aging with a sure touch, and is sweet without every turning sappy. Notable as the last feature film performance of Richard Roundtree. 4/5.

I was interviewed for a movie on apartheid censorship in 2022 and I saw the movie last Sunday. Not bad but it was a little overwhelming to see myself onscreen in a full cinema 😊

The Burglar (1957) - really nice print of a very good film noir with moments of excellence. If you wanted a reason to watch it's this: Jayne Mansfield. She looks incredible and actually does a great job in the role of kid sister to the titular burglar. (speaking of titular...)

I had never seen her in a movie where she wasn't just playing herself, she clearly had some sort of stage acting experience. Martha Vickers also lends her talents, but the romance between her and the burglar is goofy with pretentious dialogue, reminding me of why I tend to prefer 40s or even 30's crime movies.

decent budget with locations near and in Atlantic City.

4.25 for the movie bumped up to 4.50 because she just looks that good. not a classic, but  a "worth seeing" that actually, really is worth seeing

edit: if you don't find Mansfield attractive the score is probably a point lower, honestly
