Title: Worst 50 Horror Films from the '80s
Post by: clockworkcanary on April 25, 2007, 11:01:46 AM
Worst 50 Horror flicks from the 1980s that played in theaters:

To kick things off, I nominate...

50.  Wes Craven's Shocker (1989)
Freddy Krueger's electric clone, initially intended to spawn his own series, Horrice Pinker appears in dreams, jumps from body to body, travels on electrical currents, and goofiest-looking of all, he can fight in TV land.  Ultimately defeated by his son, Jonathan, Jonathan's ghostly girlfriend, and a remote control.

Where to begin?

49. Pieces (1982)
The funniest slasher movie ever made, but for all the wrong reasons.

48. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME (1981)
Any horror movie starring Melissa Sue Anderson from Little House on the Prairie definitely belongs on this list.  I bought the DVD a few months ago and it was just as bad as when I saw it during its theatrical run.

47. JAWS: THE REVENGE (1987)
A psychic shark that roars seeks REVENGE against the family of the man who killed it. Good primer on the migratory habits of conchs.

I saw this at the theater during its initial run with the original 'shark speared by the boat' and 'dead Mario Van Peebles' ending.
I can feel your envy through my computer screen.

46.the AMITYVILLE HORROR:the EVIL ECSCAPES,Part IV (1989) The evil is....a possessed lamp. Yes a LAMP. Some shmucks by it at a yard sale...and seems it used to be in the old haunted house. Pretty f#cking lame. And boring.Bad...and not in a good way;as in- picking a scab is more interesting -way.

45) A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge.  One of the worst sequels ever made and it also makes a huge error on contradicting the rules established by the original film. (a couple years  before Highlander 2 would do it a few years later.)

44) A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child  The 5th elm street film commits one of the worst sins that a movie can make: It's boring as hell.

43) Friday the 13th Part 8: Jason Takes Manhattan.  Should have been titled Jason Takes the Love Boat.  I saw this in the theater and I still to this date develop nervous ticks whenever someone brings up this cinematic abortion.

42) ANGEL HEART (1987)  It's been 20 years since I've looked at the thing, but I remember Robert DeNiro eats hard-boiled egg (allegory for tough-as-nails detective).  Mickey Rourke don't know it.  Confusion followed by jiggly ass shot.   Harry is no Angel.

41. THE GALAXY INVADER (1985)
"An alien is hunted by a gang of drunken hillbillies" pretty much sums it up.

Baltimore's remarkable Don Dohler remakes THE ALIEN FACTOR (1978) for the second time. For his first remake see NIGHT BEAST (1982).

Seeing Dohler regulars like George Stover (who was also in a bunch of John Waters movies, most memorably smothered to death in DESPERATE LIVING when 300 lb Jean Hill sits on his face after screaming "I don't want no white man lookin' at my Tampax!"... but I digress), Ann Frith, Richard Ruxton, Greg Dohler, etc. again is sort of like attending a family reunion for your father's creepy second cousins.

For some reason footage from this film of Stover getting clobbered by the beastie showed up in the title sequence for MST3K's version of POD PEOPLE.

R.I.P. Don.

39.) Creepozoids (1987) - Linnea Quiqley and a bunch of other people bumble their way across a horribly awful Aliens rip off script.  This only gives way to an Its Alive rip off which adds to the wondefully awful feel of the flick.

38) Return of the Living Dead Part 2.  Take everything that was awesome about the 1st movie and just toss it out the window by doing a lifeless cash-in/re-tread of the original whose only redeeming quality is the Michael Jackson zombie.

37) Deadly Friend

It was overplayed so much on cable.  Teenager creates a robot and then reanimates his friend with deadly results.  How did Wes Craven keep getting to direct movies like this?

36. Hell of the Living Dead (1980) - Bruno Mattei's inept zombie "masterpiece" involving a group of Interpol agents stuck in a zombie infested section of New Guinea. The film boasts some of the dumbest characters ever (SHOOT THE ZOMBIES IN THE DAMNED HEADS ALREADY!), music by Goblin (borrowed from Romero's "Dawn of the Dead?"), and ah hell, its just an awful movie!

35. Humongous (1982) -  A group of people end up on an island inhabited by a giant, furry, cannibalistic retard. Cool idea, but damn it this one was boring.

34. The Abomination (1986)

Woman pukes up tumor, which turns out to be a monster that crawls into a boy's body and forces him to kill for it and keep it fed.  Sounds like a good premise, but the lack of editing, the switching between regular camera and camcorders, not to mention the paper mache monster, horribly mismatched audio track, and irksome acting all add up to nothing but a terrible indy flick.

33. The Prey (1984)

A group of teens go to the woods to screw and get chopped up by a crazy burn-victim gypsy.  About 30 minutes of the film can be called "plot."  The rest can be called "filler," which involves scenes obviously taken from a nature special (a la Mattei), teens walking around and looking at the forest, and a retarded forest ranger who tells jokes to animals and does a pointless singing scene.  Thankfully, he gets killed.  It's one of those cases where the film was better off as a short.

The Lost Boys

You know I'm sure I'm going to think of five worst horror films than this one from the eighties, five seconds after posting this.

The Fly II.

These were all made in South Africa.  :tongueout:

The Demon / Midnight Caller (1980, Dir: Percival Rubens) Probably the worst horror / slasher film ever with murky photography and a totally unresolved ending.

The Stay-Awake (1987, Dir: John Bernard) Teens on a sleep-over or pajama party are stalked and slashed by something faintly resembling a blow up beach toy.

Return Of The Family Man (1988, Dir: John Murlowski) An SA remake of the film The Stepfather, not even worth your time.

City Of Blood (1986, Dir: Darrell Roodt) Odd horror film concerning a sucidal pathologist who is stalked by a gang of masked killers. Very strange film indeed and with a very loaded political message.

The Curse 111 / Panga (1989, Dir Sean Barton) Another odd film focusing on ritual murder in SA, bears no relation to the other films in the Curse series.

POLTERGIEST II:the OTHERSIDE (1986) Whatta lameass piece of tripe! A kid gets attacked by his own tooth braces...? And the flying scene is about as bad as in the old SUPERMAN TV show...whatta godawful mess!!! Yhough the creepy old guy was cool...not cool enuff to save this mess.

Oh, and I agree with the FLY II...that was one of thee VERY worst! Good call!

:bouncegiggle: I forgot about these SA horrors: how could I?

Headhunter / Bloodshot (1988, Dir: Francis Schaeffer)
The Howling IV (1988, Dir: John Hough)
Buried Alive / Ravenscroft (1988, Dir: Gerard Kikoine)
HellGate (1989, Dir: William A. Levey)
Time of The Beast / Mutator (1989, Dir: John R. Bowey)

Mutator has Embeth Davidtz in it!  :teddyr:

No idea where these would land now that the numbering thing's been all effed up, but here are a few that have yet to be mentioned but have scarred my soul:

Master of Evil/The Demon Lover
Rock N' Roll Nightmare
Trick or Treat
Killer Workout

I was so ready to splatter Troll II up here too, but it misses this list by one stinking year...

#25 Terror Train (1980)
Frat prank goes wrong ...time passes...party on a train at New Years...silly looking killer mask.  Basically, one of a million holiday killer rip offs.  Poor Jamie.

The Dungeonmaster might count here as a bad horror film, I'm not sure.

The Howling II is certainly one.

Too bad they didn't get the late great Doug Henning.

SaintMort, you could have stabbed me in the crotch and not caused as much pain as your post.     My Bloody Valentine is a classic!  Not only is the killer in one of the best slasher outfits of all time, the film is also fun as hell.  The ascot that T.J. wears in last third of the film is reason enough to watch it!

Also known as DEVIL MASTER,directed by Donald Farmer! I kinda like it,in a bad movie way,but your off on the year...it was made in 1977. Ted Nugent was originally slated to star as the devil worshiping long hair nut...but backed out! Farmer is from my home state of Michigan, where this was filmed. If your lucky enuff to have a copy,I'd keep it...it's almost impossible to find anymore! I bought a copy under the DEVIL MASTER title,at a flea market,in on of those giant clamboxes with the geniric cover paintings...

Forbidden Zone (1980)

A mysterious door in the basement of the Hercules house leads to the Sixth Dimension by way of a gigantic set of intestine. When Frenchy slips through the door, King Fausto falls in love with her. The jealous Queen Doris takes Frenchy prisoner, and it is up to the Hercules family and friend Squeezit Henderson to rescue her.

I saw this one on satellite recently, and it was so bad that I had to watch it twice...just to make sure that the seemingly now permanent look of "WTF" on my face wasn't just me being unusually dense.

co written and directed by the brother of Danny Elfman, and reflective of both Danny's weirdness from The Cramps and his own from Oingo Boingo, the only redeeming factor this flick had was numerous gratuitous breast and butt shots.

The Jar (1984).  Some hippie looking dude driving along one day comes upon a car crash. While checking to see if there's anyone trapped inside, he finds a jar(!) containing some kind of demon that he proceeds to inexplicably take home. The thing in the jar(!) proceeds to take over his mind somehow and make him go insane.  Many shots of naked man butt follow.  One of the most boring movies that I've ever seen.

Well, there would have been, if they had done a sequel to "The Lost Boys" like they were planning on doing. The sequel was to be called "The Lost Girls" with a lot of hot vampire chicks in it. I don't know why they never did do the sequel. "The Lost Boys" certainly did enough business at the box office to warrant a sequel.

Night Train to Terror (1985)

You know, I never did watch this one all the way through.  I can scarcely get through the beginning musical number before I feel fresh, warm blood building up in my throat.  I can only fathom what the entire movie would do to me...

Now that they're making direct-to-DVD Lost Boys sequels, we might see that Lost Girls concept come to fruition.  Alas, it doesn't look like LB3 is going in that direction.  But, to be honest, my interest in seeing the Coreys and Jamison Newlander all grown up just doesn't really seem worth it like it would have been in, say 1991 or so.

I'm surprised no one mention Hobogoblins.  I think it was trying to be a horror movie... maybe a sci-fi film or maybe a exploitation film?  I don't know, its hard to tell and I really don't want to watch it again to determine what type of film it is.

I was surprised how many people liked Evil Laugh.  I thought it was pretty damn awful.

I know that this is an old post, but did you know that they play the same clip 4 times before the movie ends?
It's quite surreal.

While we're on the topic of threes.
Halloween:  Silver Shamrock pretty much stunk it up too

hehe... Halloween 3 is not as bad as part 2, part 4 and part 5...

Halloween part 2... (stolen from Empire Strikes Back) aka... Laurie Strode is Michael Myers sister and what happens... Loomis SHOOTS Mayers in the EYES and Mayers acts like a blindman... Oddly, didnt Laurie stick a hanger in Michael's eye in the first movie (that would of been yesterday)

Halloween part 4 Cool Loomis and Myers are not dead... And Myers isnt blind either... Mmmm, I guess the "dark side" runs strong in his blood.

Halloween part 5 We get to see Michael's emotional side...

Howling IV: The Original Nightmare. This movie was absolute PAIN. If it wasn't painful, it was boring. A true nightmare.

Scream (1983).  Not of the Wes Craven series, but a stupid murderous ghost story.  People hike, people talk, people get chased, people get killed, I get bored to death.

Don't you guys mean best horror films from the 80s?  :teddyr:
How about Scream (1981) - just absolutely painful to sit through.
Who could forget The Last Slumber Party (1988)? Ugh...I know I've mentioned these two abominations in previous threads, but they're really fitting for this topic.

To put in my two cents,(worth absolutly nothing right now),Deadly Friend was a HBO premier movie that went nowhere.Amity Horror 4? Amity Horror 3 stopped me from watching any other Amity horror flick. "Pieces", that was christophers  george's last film. I've seen a lot worse and I am surprised nobody has run a sequel spree off of it. Happy Birthday to me, and Prom night,to me are the canadians trying to cash in. Terror Train, I don't what to think.I think one of the the worst video-home movies is "Trick or treat". To me, this movie is painful to watch,or even to describe.I really enjoyed Manic Cop and the first sequel. The thrid was pretty bad,but not forgotton.I may have missed something, but did anybody mention "Deathstalker".Last I checked ,there was 3 of them.

I LOVE Trick Or Treat, I thought it was a really cool movie and was quite surprised that it was one of only a few heavy metal related flicks of the 80s. The Sammi Curr character is great (though Marc Price was a bit annoying) and the music by Fastway was some of their best.

As for Deathstalker, there's about 4 films last time I checked.

Yeah, it sucked, but you gotta give it props for having Sybil Danning get naked in it.  :)

Friday The 13th Part 5 was pretty damn bad.  Not as bad as Jason Goes To Hell, but that was made in the '90s.

Graduation Day was pretty rotten.

Unhinged was deadly dull.. and filmed in my hometown, too.

Not sure if it was mentioned yet, but how about "Don't Go In The Woods.. Alone!"

No one said these two: R.O.T.O.R. and Outlaw of Gor, both on the Bottom 100 of IMDb

This is a Great Thread! Being a Teenager and a Horror fan in the 80`s , I saw many of these movies in the theater!

I can add MOTEL HELL ( 1980 ) A personal favorite because my friends mom hated horror movies and we finally got her to take us to this. Naturally she never took us to anything ever again!

Also I would like to add this two because they SUCK!!!!!!!!!  and they are a perfect example of why some good movies should never have sequel's

( 1983 )

Sybil Danning was hard pressed to keep her clothes on in anything.  That being said, it's never a bad thing to have a nice piece of flesh like that exposed in anything.   :teddyr:

Whats up with all the hatred of Happy Birthday To Me & My Bloody Valentine? They're great in my book.

Death Spa (1988) I had to grind my teeth to get this turkey. Flashy VHS cover though.
