Does anyone else besides me like these films? I always loved the overly dark humor in them. I was watching the second one on television tonight and the parts where Wednesday goes to camp is absolutely hilarious to me.
I will always watch the show when I find it on, and I have the first two movies on DVD. I loved Joan Cusack in the second one, her performance was over the top.
I could never get into them. It has been a number of years since I tried (I gave each a single go), so maybe my opinion may have changed. On the other hand, the original show was never high on my list either. I think that "Munsters" was more my style and I still was not a regular viewer of that.
I wasn't wild about the movies...loved the TV show! Maybe that's why...I couldn't picture anyone but John Astin as Charles...and Jackie Coogan WAS Fester! (Though I did like the camp scene in part 2....Wednesday trading serial killer cards... :bouncegiggle:)
I've always preferred the Addams' Family to the Munsters, and enjoyed to movies. Loved the camp scene in the first one where Wednesday has the nerd kids as the Indians basically revolt.
I always thought they were the best movies adapted from a TV show, at least the first two. I think it was mainly because the cast melded together very well. When I heard they were doing more after Raul died, I was adamant against seeing them.

I liked them, the crazy dark humor and all. I especially liked the second one (well the first three fourths of it anyway, started to run out of gas by the end), course part of me liking them might of been cause I had an obsessive crush over Christina Ricci at the time...
Several great lines...
"Don't worry, Fester, someday you'll find someone. Someone very special. Someone who won't press charges."
(Wednesday, Pugsley, and Grandma are getting ready to bury a pet)
Wednesday:...and we honor the fortunate dead.
(Box suddenly yowls, indicating the cat inside is still alive.)
[At Debbie's house]
Morticia: Where are we?
Grandma: Looks familiar... of course, the gates of hell.
(Counselor calls for someone to play a drowning victim)
Amanda: I'll be the victim!
Wednesday: All your life.
Amanda: Why are you dressed like somebody died?
Wednesday: Wait.
[about baby Pubert]
Gomez: He has my father's eyes.
Morticia: Gomez, take those out of his mouth.
Gomez: Children, why do you hate the baby?
Pugsley: We don't hate him. We just wanna play with him.
Wednesday: Especially his head.
And yes, I did go to the imdb, but a lot of these I was able to type from memory... :)
BTW, in this case, "Addams" has to two ds.
Didn't care that much for the 1st movie but I thought that 2nd one was a lot of fun mainly because of that baby.
Own them both --
Love them both --
Multiple viewings of each, though I'm still VHS on this one & will probably only get DVD when these tapes go bye-bye.
Anyone notice that the current M&M's candy commercials on TV are referencing the movies, and not the TV show? I mean, those candies are Raul Julia and Angelica Huston, not John Astin and Carolyn Jones.
Yes, this sadly is one of those cases wherein only Raul Julia could continue the premise onward -- I simply cannot imagine another current, popular Hispanic actor, good as they may be, in the role. Jimmy Smits? Who?

Eat us, yea it's Thanksgiving Day
Eat us, we make a nice buffet
We won't stay fresh for very long
So eat us before we finish this song
Eat me!
Sauteed or barbecued
Eat me!
We once were pets but now we're food
We won't stay fresh for very long
So eat us before we finish this song
Eat us before we finish this song
Yup. That's from memory. I friggin' love those movies.
for quotes I've always like this one from the first one...
Wednesday To Fester: Pass The Salt
Morticia: Wednesday what do we say?
Wednesday To Fester: NOW
Which show came first ... Adams family or Munsters?

Which show came first ... Adams family or Munsters?
I believe the Munsters did, though the cartoon strip Charles Addams created that was adapted into the Addams Family show might have been around already.

Actually, "The Addams Family" came first by six days. "The Addams Family" premiering on television on September 18, 1964, and "The Munsters" premiering on television on September 24, 1964.
"THE ADDAMS FAMILY" TV series was inspired by cartoons that first appeared in
The New Yorker in the 1930s, anybody remember if it appeared in the 50s each week in
The Saturday Evening Post?

Well, the commercial has the same portrait-like setup as the opening of the TV show...

I so agree with you about Raul Julia...I was lucky enough to have seen him live on stage (in MAN OF LA MANCHA). I really like the old TV series which was just as clever as, and often moreso, than
"THE MUNSTERS," but perhaps not as loveable.

One of the great things about those two movies is how the second one really holds up and in some ways bests the first. "I wanted a
Ballerina Barbie
not Malibu Barbie...!" Joan Cusak
I'm a big fan of the movies and tv show, and will watch whenever they're on. Raul Julia I liked as Gomez. Especially in the first one, like when he calls Sally Jesse Raphael looking for the cannibals. :teddyr:
The film has one of the best ensemble casts ever assembled. They all fit the characters perfectly. Not to mention the set and costume design is great. BTW, one of the things I really liked is the tone of the films is much closer to the comics than the TV show was. Both films I find quite enjoyable, though I will say I like the first one a bit better.
I really love Charles Addams comics. Id like to get the book that collects them all. One that particularly sticks out in my mind is the one with the kids room with all the warning signs on the wall.

Works for mw too.
I loved the wild openly weird nature of the Addams family. I like the Munsters too, but the Addams style suited me better, i guess.
White collor Vs. Blue collor,so to speak.
I liked the different quieter style of the films. Raul and Angelica and Christine really nailed it.
"Are they made from real girlscouts?"
I love watching the reruns on TV Land at like, 1 in the afternoon.
John Astin was hilarious as Gomez.
The movies work on a totally different level though.
I loved these movies too.
I was surprised to find out that the girl scout selling cookies from the first movie is the same actress who did the character of Harmony in the Buffy The Vampire Slayer series (Mercedes McNab).
Christine Ricci was an underrated child actor I think. She is deliciously creepy in these movies
They're both a lot of fun, especially the first, but what I never see mentioned is how wonderfully weird and creepy the atmosphere is for a comedy. There's a lot of attention to detail - the huge catacombs under the house, the little man in the model train, the seemingly endless hidden treasure room, and so on. Barry Sonnenfeld's films tend to be like this, even his godawful ones like RV.
I think its wonderful how most of you just automatically made the comparison from the Addams Family to the Munsters. I think someone is either a Munsters or a Addams Family person.
I choose the Munsters over the Addams Family TV series any day, but when it comes the the Addams Family movies, they jump right over the Munsters.
Good call, evildeadchick!
I think that your favorite pick out of two choices tells you quite a lot about your personality, too. This is actually discussed by Jesse Custer and Cassidy in the Preacher comics, the example coupled pair of choices being Stan Laurel & Oliver Hardy vs. Charlie Chaplin (both agreed on Stan & Oliver, representing the "buddies type", I would have picked Chaplin, obviously representing the "loner type"). Since then I've been thinking of other promising choices, e.g.:
Mickey Mouse vs. Donald Duck (definitely Donald for me)
King Kong vs. Godzilla (KONG!)
Arnold Schwarzenegger vs. Sylvester Stallone (the Terminator...)
Star Wars vs. Star Trek (probably a weak one, but Star Wars for me)
Of course one could go over the top with it - tea or coffee, wine or beer,....
I have no idea what all this says about my character, though.
I liked the Munsters more.
