The Shame: Lady GaGa.
She kind of falls under the new gimmick pop angle out there now. Dress funny, have little talent and people will buy your records. People will be saying "remember that Lady...something singer" ten years from now.
Madonna + Cyndi Lauper + Stacey Q = What's the point in Lady Gaga?
His name is Prince and he is our first to enter the Hall of Fame.
Prince, although he p!sses me off with his music politics, is an amazing musician. He was huge in bringing funk to a new level in the 80s and 90s. Plus he was never afraid to put sleaze into music.
I'm not really a Prince fan, but I agree that he's an amazing musician. It's interesting to compare him and Lady GaGa, because they both seem to rely on gimmick and "extramusical" factors - still, while GaGa seems to use gimmick as her primary vehicle, Prince just uses it to to enhance the Prince-experience. I mean, with Prince, I'm sure people will remember the beats, melodies, lyrics, whatever, while GaGa will be remembered for her stage antics, her dresses and her gimmicks and probably not so much for the music itself.
I liked Prince's early stuff, but then he got really into dance music and I lost interest. I still haven't heard Lady GaGa or whatever. I plan on missing her entirely if at all possible.

Sounds like a good plan ;-)
I'm gonna go against the grain around here. I quite like Lady Gaga and not cause of her stage antics, but her music.
Granted, she doesn't compare to Prince on any level (well, she's hotter to look at, but we're talking talent.) But, my friend told me she's got a huge gay following, apparently, and is being hailed as the 'new Madonna.' So I think she'll be around for a while.
Plus, when you've got both Christopher Walken AND Weezer covering your songs on only two albums, you've made it.

She does seem to have more talent than a lot of her "colleagues", to be sure, but as for her music - I don't think there's anything special about it at all. I really think she's wasting what talent she has on low-quality, pointless, uninspiring pop music (just my opinion).
AC/DC enters the Hall of Fame.
I'm ok with AC/DC but just ok. I like some of the Bon Scott era stuff but just don't like Brian Johnson. I will admit Young is a great guitar player. I did a "KILL" against them early but figured they were going to "FAME" regardless. Rev kept up the good fight regardless though.
As for The Eurythmics, decent pop band but pale by comparison to it's competition in the game. Annie Lennox is an amazing vocalist though.
AC/DC certainly belongs in the hall of fame. A lot of their stuff's stimply great boogie hard rock.
But I think Eurythmics do not deserve being in the hall of shame. I think they're more than just a decent pop band. I think they're a quality pop band who are way superiort to a lot of the pop junk that the musi industry churns out these days.
I don't like AC/DC, but I do respect them.
LADY GAGA, though, is a real douche cuz she is not like SCATMAN
Aerosmith enters the Hall of Fame.
I'm a pretty big Aerosmith fan. They kind of spanned the decades while (most of the time anyhow) keeping a great rock sound.

Fair enough. I'm not the biggest fan in the world, but they did make a lot of great rock songs. I must admit that I liked the Pump album.
Britney Spears is put to Shame!
Meh, other than having a slammin' @ss I really have no love loss for Britney. Its one thing to sing mindless songs and have talent a la Christina Aguleira. However, its a travesty when one sings mindless songs minus the talent. She's a dumb redneck with no talent.

The quote of the day :-)
Green Day got KILLED by me, so Balzac (Japanese Horror Punk) is up- LISTEN TO PARADOX!!!!!!!!!
Iron Maiden and Fleetwood Mac: Fame
and as already mentioned, Green Day: Shame
I respect Green Day's longevity in mediocre pop punk but they're just "meh" to me. I do like a few songs here and there.
Not a big Fleetwood Mac guy. I was killing them early but they're ok. Maiden of course belongs in the Fame category.
Hall Of Fame: W.A.S.P., Motley Crue, King Diamond, Venom and Thergothon.

Just a heads up, this is based on the following game on the board.

I do agree with your assessments though. Feel free to join in on the game
The Clash is an interesting choice. I loved their first 2 or 3 albums, but hated everything they did after that. If they had broken up after the first two discs, I would have saved them over Balzac. Their later stuff got so horrendously bad that it tarnished all of it for me.
Journey enter the Hall of Shame.
Not a fave group of mine so I don't mind :teddyr:
I'm kind of "meh" on Journey so I voted against them.
The Clash is a good nomination although I have more respect for them than actual enjoyment of their music.
Michael Jackson and Duran Duran are winning :bouncegiggle: :bouncegiggle: :bouncegiggle: :bouncegiggle: :bouncegiggle:
It's so sublimely out of place to see Balzac on the same list, I'm going to try to keep them alive as long as possible.
Balzac enters the Hall of Shame.
And the moral of the story is, those who like Michael Jackson and/or Fleetwood Mac are not likely to appreciate Balzac.:bouncegiggle:
Good for Balzac.
Oh well Ghoul, I'm sure we can agree on something else later in the game. Perhaps Culture Club will make the list? :bouncegiggle:
Good one, Darksider. :bouncegiggle:
Sh*t, I'd vote the hell FOR Culture Club.

I chose

London Calling, though had others back in the day) and I wanted to choose a band that was not a favorite (maybe even overrated...) but a band I too "respect".

Don't worry, they're not even remotely good. ...And their two big admirers here can give up on that "that's what rock n' roll's about" crap. You can get the same kick from listening to more technical bands and without them ripping off the Misfits or having 5 separate clothing brands. Yeah, "rock on"...

Yeah those "technical bands" are all 100% original, and they've got so much soul. They are never influenced by any other bands or musicians in the least bit. It's really astounding how different they all look and sound from eachother. So much so that each band is truly a genre in and of itself! And they would never attempt to sell any clothing, especially T-shirts. I'm going to be "cool" now and go listen to my classic rock station. I can always count on them to tell me what's good.
:bouncegiggle:
By the way, I also think the clothing line thing is stupid, but don't assume that is a common practice of the bands that I like, because it isn't.
I don't listen to any classic rock stations.
I understand what you're saying, but my point is Balzac are awful in comparison to alot of bands. Your arguement was that Balzac were the antithesis of everything considered serious or popular musically. You claim that's what rock n' roll is all about. That's the punk mentality quite clearly. Rock n' roll is about an energy, a feeling, a spirit that music instills in people. You'll find that in plenty of bands far better than Balzac whether they are popular or not - whether they sell f**king t-shirts or not.
Look at the Sex Pistols for instance, they were thrown together and couldn't play a lick, but are well remembered. At the time disco was the dominant force in the charts and the Sex Pistols were the complete other end of the spectrum. They were brash and in your face and the kids back then ate that up - as is the case with every musical generation. The Pistols for their time were great and did inspire alot of other bands. But Balzac have been around since what? 1992? They're only well known in their native Japan and at the end of the day what's the point of playing music if you can't actually play?
Just so you know, the only reason I kicked up a stink about this is because, hardly anyone knew who they were when they got posted on the fame or shame game, plus how the hell Journey got killed off before them is beyond me - and I'm not even a Journey fan btw!

You praise the Sex Pistols, then you say "what's the point of playing music if you can't actually play?" It's like you get it but you don't get it at the same time. If you look back at my posts, I never said Balzac was my favorite band of all time, I even mentioned how they haven't sounded as good to me as they used to in their early days. And I agree with you about the Pistols. I would have saved them over Balzac. You are right, I am coming from the "punk mentality" as you put it, and I'm sure you can see that Balzac was the most "punk rock" of all of the bands on the list, so naturally they got my votes.
I just meant that I can tell the difference between geniune talent and artists that are crap, regardless of personal taste or popularity. I never said Balzac was your favourite band of all time either. I'll shut up now.
I guess were back to where we were when we started this conversation a few days ago. One man's crap is another man's gold. I can leave it at that. I'm going to shutup now too. At least until I happen to see another band worth saving on the list.
Music is a passion for all and its easy to get fired up about who is better than who. Almost like a sports rivalry but lets do our best to keep things civil.

What a shame ;-) Actually, I quite like a lot of their stuff, and, compared to a lot of other 1980s pop acts, I think they were quite original.
It's been a while since I've checked the list. I thought Michael Jackson would have made it in by now. Maybe there's hope for you guys yet.
:bouncegiggle:
How appropriate to see Bad Company still wallowing in mediocrity at 18 after all this time on the list. It's a fate well-suited for them.
:bouncegiggle:
I was going to jump in again just to knock a couple points off Michael Jackson, but that would have required me to save Willie Nelson. I had it all ready to go with my cursor on the submit button, but I just couldn't do it.

Queen enters the Hall of Fame!
Alvin & the Chipmunks obviously didn't annoy only me as they enter the Hall of Shame.
Whether you agree with what he did (or didn't?! Who knows if it's all true?) in his personal life, he definitely belongs in any music-based Hall of Fame for his contributions to music.

You're talking about MJ, of course. To be honest, I never liked a single one of his songs. I was completely nonplussed by the success of "Thriller" at the time. But just based on his immense popularity, he deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. Lots of people obviously connect with his stuff, just not me.
Yes I was referring to Michael Jackson. You could argue that he forever changed music with his contributions.
Michael made music magical on all levels. He belongs in the Hall Of Fame, plain and simple.
Bad Company was very slowly, which shows they do have some fans out there, put to shame. Now they're in um...bad company  :bouncegiggle: . Sorry couldn't resist.
I do enjoy Bad Company and find Paul Rogers to be a strong vocalist. Matter of fact, I even dug their cheesy strip club-ish stuff from the 80s. However, they were in the wrong place at the wrong time in the game.
Johnny Cash is a great choice. I love so many of his songs. I would vote to save him, but the problem is, if I do, I would be helping to put him in the same category as Michael Jackson. There's no way I am going to do that to the man in black. :bluesad:
Just a note: Updated Hall list is on page 4.
Styx enters the Hall of Shame rather easily. Surprised they didn't seem to have any defenders but they were up against some quality opposition.
And Johnny Cash does indeed enter the Hall of Fame.
Styx is a good band but like Jasse said, competition kind of wasted it away. JC was a shoe in for HOF.
Willie Nelson joins the Hall of Fame while Muddy Waters joins Shame. Updated list on page 4.
The Ramones quickly go into the Hall of Fame with practically no opposition. They truly belong in a music Hall of Fame IMO. Just fantastic, unique songs and performances from them.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers join the Hall of Shame. Kinda surprised to see them go there so easily as I always thought they had a good following. I like some of their stuff but I don't find anything of theirs to be essential or anything.
Elvis Presley, the King of Rock 'n' Roll joins the Hall of Fame. It was pretty much a given he would I think. Honestly I expected a little opposition but there was practically none.
What the hell, MEGADETH enters the HALL OF SHAME?! dis is BS!
Megadeath indeed joins the Hall of Shame. They did have some support, like Muddy Waters too, but not enough it seems.
U2 joins the Hall of Shame. I've always thought they were a pretty good band but their work seems a little uneven. The Joshua Tree was fantastic IMO but everything else kind of pales next to it although I've enjoyed some tunes here and there.
U2 has some songs I love but mostly pumps out stuff I don't like at all. Their last few albums I found to be completely unsustainable. Yet they somehow win awards for them. Hence why I don't watch award shows much.
Alice in Chains joins the Hall of Fame.

Alice in Chains joins the Hall of Fame.
I've made it known many times on the board how much I enjoy AIC. Easily in my top 10 favs of all time.
Heart joins the Hall of Shame. They did have a few tunes I enjoyed and I remember them being quite popular in their time but truthfully I never personally found anything of theirs music-wise to be truly memorable.
Updated Hall on Page 4.
R.E.M. joins the Hall of Fame. I've been a huge fan of R.E.M. for practically as long as I can remember but I definitely feel their earlier stuff from I.R.S. is their best stuff (Murmur, Reckoning, Lifes Rich Pageant, Fables of the Reconstruction, Document) while it was less successful than their WB hit albums (not to say there weren't some great ones - Green, Out of Time and Automatic For the People come to mind). Their more recent output has some great songs here and there (but honestly I think it pales to the stuff they did in the 80s and early 90s) as the band as always has re-invented itself time and time again sometimes more successfully than others.
"You wanted the best. You got the Best!"
Kiss joins the Hall of Fame. Say what you want about Kiss, they sure always knew how to put on a show and I can't help but think of them when I think of the 1970s.
ABBA joins the Hall of Shame. :buggedout: My girlfriend's sister would have a conniption fit if she knew this as they're her long time favourite band. I think personally they have some good tunes but I could take 'em or leave 'em.
The Beach Boys join the Hall of Fame. Catchy good-natured tunes that can most easily be associated with fun in the sun and good times. Their music is also highly influential on numerous other bands IMO.
Kid Rock joins the Hall of Shame. Personally I do think he can be a good showman but his music doesn't strike me as being particularly memorable and certainly isn't what I personally consider Hall of Fame material.
The Beach Boys had that catchy good-natured side, but what sold me on them is the more thoughtful Pet Sounds. And Good Vibrations is a pop symphony. Definitely Hall of Fame material.
The Police join the Hall of Fame. As a kid I loved their music and I find it still has a sort of timeless quality and lasting appeal. I certainly prefer it a lot over Sting's singles work.
Supertramp was put to Shame. Honestly I'm more indifferent about them than anything else.
Don't like Supertamp much. I had "Breakfast in America" as a teen but rarely listened to it. Hall of Shame is fine with me.
Madonna joins the Hall of Shame. Say what you want, Madonna sure knew how to market her sexuality and invent and reinvent herself to maintain a great deal of popular appeal. Personally I never really liked any of her music and the best thing I liked inspired by her was Weird Al's "Like A Surgeon".
Not at all surprised to see Madonna in the Hall of Shame. As you say, she was a genius at marketing herself, but I don't think she's added anything of particular value to the field of popular music.
Oingo Boingo join the Hall of Fame. This American 70s-80s New Wave band has a bit of a cult following I'd guess you'd say. They certainly have their bad movie/B-movie connections what with Danny Elfman as songwriter/vocalist (Forbidden Zone, Weird Science, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, My Best Friend is a Vampire all used music performed by the band) so I'm not terribly surprised at their inclusion here although I do feel it's fitting anyways.
T. Rex, the 60s-70s English Folk Rock/Glam Rock band enters the Hall of Fame. Let the children of the revolution rejoice.
Limp Bizkit was put to shame. Not sure that should really surprise anyone. Updated Halls on Page 4.

Not really. They're pretty laughable. Although, eh. I got some of their cd's stocked away somewhere. I was young.
Bob Dylan joins the Hall of Fame (not really all that surprising that although it took a little while) while Bon Jovi joins the Hall of Shame (most of us who voted for them called them a guilty pleasure). Updated Halls on Page 4.
Bon Jovi joins the Hall of Shame.
Ray Charles joins the Hall of Fame. Certainly cn't argue with that. Terrific musician, I myself own his Greatest Hits.
Foreigner joins the Hall of Shame. Probably would have had a chance against much lesser competition...
The Who join the Hall of Fame. Rock legends and rightfully so, this was hardly surprising. Personally I really like "Behind Blue Eyes" and "Pinball Wizard" best I think. Great performers and hugely influential, they definitely belong in the Hall of Fame.
The KLF join the Hall of Shame. The most shameful thing about the KLF arguably was their retirement performance where they fired blanks over the audience out of a machine gun and thereafter dropped a dead sheep at the aftershow party although it still stands as one of the most unforgettable stunts pulled at the BRIT awards. They originally planned to dump buckets of blood on the audience. The KLF were an outrageous acid house electronica band known for doing wild and outlandish things quite unlike any other bnd. Personally I love a lot of their music but most of all their work as The Timelords and particularly their song " Doctorin' the Tardis" which samples the theme music and Gary Glitter. The KLF were also known as the JAMS and the Justified Ancients of Mu-Mu. They are perhaps best remembered for their hit "Justified and Ancient" that they performed with Tammy Wynette. The KLF often used samples of other music in their music with use of a digital sampler. As the KLF, they also had hits with "What Time is Love?" and "3 A.M. Eternal" by which time KLF were largely doing a lot of their own stuff. The KLF were controversial yet also outspoken and used a sly, cunning sense of humor and often some form of symbolism to often send a message about something or another of importance to them.

I think I'm the only one to vote against them.
The Misfits join the Hall of Fame. While no doubt popular on this site for their frequent musical tributes to B-movies, the Misfits were also you could argue pioneers - certainly they were when it comes to the Horror punk subgenre and their music, especially from the late 70s, early 80s is certainly some of the best in terms of hardcore punk. I'd definitely agree with anyone who says the Glenn Danzig led Misfits were the best version although I also liked the later more metal sounding Michale Graves version. Still in whatever form, some elements remained the same - the horror, bassist Jerry Only, the B-movie tributes, the make-up, the devilock, the fiends and the fast, hard music.
Updated Hall page 4.
Devo join the Hall of Fame. This band is quite unlike any other with a style that has shifted from punk rock to new wave. Their stage performances are quite unique too blending science fiction themes with deadpan surrealist humor and satirical social commentary. Their sound, their look, their videos, everything make them unique and original, an act all their own and one quite good too!
Nightwish joins the Hall of Shame. This Finnish Symphonic Metal band has made waves in the past but didn`t prove quite so popular on this board. Updated Halls Page 4.
Run DMC joins the Hall of Shame. Personally I always rather liked Run DMC. They were very much one of the first truly popular mainstream rap/hip hop successes. As a kid, I remember them having a rock rap style sound that truly seemed unique at the time as these guys seemed bad and could rhyme and rap but also seemed quite capable of rocking too. I thought as a kid they were extremely cool and I constantly played their music pretending I was as "bad" as they were. Personally I thought their cover of "Walk This Way" was better than Aerosmith's version (I never really liked Aerosmith, who are in the Music Hall of Fame here btw., that much though so I'm not the best judge with regards to them).

A lot of people seem to disregard rap as nothing more than a bunch of wannabe gangsta's rapping about money and ho's and fast cars. While that may seem the norm for most modern rap, acts in the '80s like DMC, Public Enemy, Grandmaster Flash, and even the N.W.A were more than that. Did they talk about violence in the streets? Yes, but I saw it more as a call to have more political activism from the people in charge, rather than GLORIFYING it.
Oh I agree with those sentiments very much Happy and I'm actually a fan of those you named but especially Run DMC and Public Enemy.
Twisted Sister joins the Hall of Fame. Let all the SMFs rejoice! As a kid, I thought this band rocked and were badass like no other. I remember constantly playing Stay Hungry over and over again to the point I eventually wore out the cassette. "I Wanna Rock" and "We're Not Gonna Take It" stand the test of time as rock anthems not to mention the latter often being embraced by workers on protest or strike although I really love a lot of their slower songs like "The Price". They mixed in elements of heavy metal and are usually thought of as a glam metal style band but their shock appeal also brings to mind Alice Cooper but there was a certain youthful rebellious mood to their music as well that I believe is what really first made the band appeal to me so much, that and their over the top funny, very entertaining music videos. But well IMO, Twisted Sister just plain rock 'n' rolled and did it well.
Twisted Sister, to me, is kind of a vastly underrated band. Everyone says "Oh, sure, "We're Not Gonna Take It' is a good song, but that's all." Not at all. For reasons I'm not sure of, they're popularity seemed to wane and people got tired of em. But now they've kinda re-energized enthusiasm with a fanbase, albeit with a Christmas cd of sorts. But, I'm glad to see them re-emerge.
And, just curious, who nominated Alvin and The Chipmunks? I like them and all (26 and have a few cd's), but nomination for a Hall of Fame? Really?

The Beach Boys join the Hall of Fame. Catchy good-natured tunes that can most easily be associated with fun in the sun and good times. Their music is also highly influential on numerous other bands IMO.
Kid Rock joins the Hall of Shame. Personally I do think he can be a good showman but his music doesn't strike me as being particularly memorable and certainly isn't what I personally consider Hall of Fame material.
I really kinda like Kid Rock. A lot of people dont, because they don't like that he "apes" whatever is popular at the moment, going from rap, to rap/rock, to country, etc. I think he's a bit talented, but can understand where people are coming from.
Sublime joins the Hall of Shame. This reggae fusion band were quite popular in the 1990s. They incorporated elements of ska, punk, reggae, dancehall, hip-hop and even acoustic rock. Along with bands like Green Day, Offspring and Rancid, helped revive interest in a more modern version of punk although they're more ska punk really. I thought they were alright myself but well, they never struck me as being all that memorable honestly. Updated Halls Page 4.
The Dave Matthews Band were quickly put to Shame. Guess I wasn't alone in my dislike for them although I understand they've actually done quite well for themselves with today's audiences.

They've built a sizeable audience. Seen them in early July, and fans were there, 40,000 strong. I like em, as they sort of fuse a little bit of jazz, rock, hip hop, etc. To each their own.
"Weird" Al Yankovic joins the Hall of Fame. I've always liked Weird Al. I remember me and my cousin playing his songs on cassette when we were kids/teenagers and cracking up to "Eat It", "Like a Surgeon", "Addicted to Spuds", "Amish Paradise" and numerous other parodies. He's hilarious! And his songs are still fun and surprisingly catchy. I understand he's done some quality original material too and of course to us B-movie fans, we'll always have UHF too.
Al's got some quality, quality non-parody, yet very funny songs. One such song would be the recently released CNR, a song in the style of the "Chuck Norris Facts", yet about Charles Nelson Reilly and all the amazing feats he could accomplish.
Daft Punk joins the Music Hall of Shame. This French electronic music duo is definitely unusual and somewhat unique what with their popular dance recordings and their robot alter egos during performances. They've also appeared in genre films like the animated film Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem and will appear in Tron: Legacy and they've had their music used in other films including The Saint, they're playable characters in the game DJ Hero and they've had their music sampled by other performers including Janet Jackson, Busta Rhymes and Kanye West. I don't terribly dislike this band, here they were just up against too good competition. Updated Halls on Page 4.

I didn't hate them at all. I liked them. But some of the other bands listed I liked more.

I've heard the name but I know absolutely nothing about them, never voted either for or against them. But I do think it's hard for me to consider anyone Hall of Fame worthy if I've never knowingly heard their music!

I'm sure you know a few songs. They're a French "House" duo, one of them electronic influenced dance groups that get played at a lot of clubs and raves. I'd say their most widely known song is this, from around 2000/2001:
"One More Time"

A few other songs were in some commercials and tv shows.
Blue Rodeo joins the Music Hall of Fame. I've been listening to Blue Rodeo since I was a kid and I don't remember ever hearing a song by them I thought was bad. Blue Rodeo is a Canadian country and pop band first formed in 1984 and they're still going strong to this day.
The Dead Milkmen, a satirical punk rock band from the 1980s-1990s who reunited in 2008 join the Hall of Fame. In all honesty, I haven't heard too much by them...

I guess their 'biggest' claim to fame is the song "Punk Rock Girl", which was a relatively minor hit back in the mid '80s. It got played on Beavis and Butt-head in the '90s and was unmercilessly mocked. In recent times, it's been featured in some Tony Hawk games, which features a prevelence on punk music. They had some other 'minor hits' with the songs "Taking Retards to The Zoo", "b***hin Camaro" and "If You Love Someone Set Them on Fire." Around '87, baseball player Jim Walewander of the Detroit Tigers became a vocal fan of the band, which was featured on his baseball card. He even invited them to a game, and the band had a brief conversation with the team's manager. Oddly, it was this game where he hit his only major league home run.
But, the band is from my hometown, so to speak, Philadelphia, so I guess I'd say I'm a big fan of theirs, they play a bunch of shows around. :buggedout:

Happy and I both liked them and no one else felt strongly about them one way or the other. I was glad for the opportunity to bond with Happy over this cult-ish band.
I'm pretty sure I've heard "b***hin' Camaro" on college radio and I seem to recall "Punk Rock Girl" too.
Black Flag joins the Hall of Fame. One of the very first hardcore punk bands, Black Flag gave voice to a non-conformist message. They were very anti-authoritarian (and anti-police in particular although not without cause). I often find their music has elements of sarcasm, irony, social criticism and even an element of poetry after Henry Rollins became lead singer. Previous lead singers included Dez Cadena, Ron Reyes and Keith Morris. Greg Ginn was a fixture as guitarist. "Rise Above!"
Big Fan of Black Flag. Seemed to take em a while to get the votes, but they deserve it.
Bloodhound Gang joins the Music Hall of Shame. Their style of modern rap/punk/satirical comedy music performance doesn't appeal to me personally.

Yet, I love them. Personally too many musicians take their 'craft' too seriously.
Life's too short to not have fun. To each their own.
