Cheesy with lots of CGI, walking around, nerdy scientist, bossy drill sergeant and a squad that doesn't get any lines until just before they become expendable...

Bug 1975.
B movie master William B. Castle's last movie and famous for that, bug features bizarre cockroaches that emerge form the depths of the earth when there is a serious earthquake and start fires with an innate pyrotechnical ability they possess. A scientist deduces this from the number of unexplained fires that occur during and after earthquakes thru history. Yeah, I guess knocked over candles, oil lamps, gas leaks, electrical shorts, etc, couldn't possibly explain them all. 99% of them, sure, BUT NOT ALL OF THEM!!!
For a brilliant scientist this guy sure does some dumb stuff.

For once Joan Collins played the second biggest b-tch in a movie. The biggest was the queen ant.
I have to give "mimic' kudos. It was one of the only bug movies that acknowledged insects size is limited by their respitory system.
I've always really liked The Black Scorpion
(http://epguides.com/BlackScorpion/cast.jpg)
Uhmm....no..I'm not talking about that one.
I'm talking about the 1957 black and white film that featured stop motion effects from the man behind King Kong-Willis O'Brien. (Although I've read different versions as too whether he actually did the effects or simply supervised.)
It also features the creatures from Kong's lost spider pit sequence. I think its one of the reasons I like it so much. It actually has a great dark atmosphere on top of some great creature work.
Also because I am that person-I need to point out spiders and scorpions are arachnids-not insects.
Finally, how can we have this thread and not mention the queen of the monsters herself Mothra.
I finally picked up the Rebirth of Mothra trilogy and plan on watching it soon.

OK, I demand to see a coronor's report stating a man's death was due to, and I quote, "sexual exhaustion" and just exactly how this cause of death was determined.
There was this movie called Superfly a long time ago, I expected it to have a giant mutant radioactive or prehistoric fly buzzing around smashing buildings and eating people while bullets and cannons just bounced off it until some scientist invented a new bug spray or built a missile with the front shaped like s giant flyswatter, but all I remember was this awful criminal who went around threatening to turn other guy's wives into whores and have people's families murdered. I was hoping the giant fly would eat him but it never showed up.

know that's gonn a be a real
Bad movie!
BTW how many movies about monster killer bees
were there anyway? I mean bees can be bad, sure, but they have redeeming qualities. For a real evil monster how about a wasp?! Those things are worse than bees and have no redeeming qualities. Plus they paralyze creatures with their sting, plant an egg in them and the little horror eats it's prey alive.
Damn, they shoildm have made horror movies about wasps instead of bees. One I can remember was "monster from green hell"

Again because I have to be
that guy...
Insects: 6 legs. Three segmented bodies (head, abdomen, thorax)
EX: ants, bees, grasshoppers, moths, butterflies, beetles
Arachnids Most have at least 8 legs-but can have more.
Ex: Spiders, scorpions, ticks, mites and horseshoe crabs
Crustaceans : Most are aquatic, Different number of legs
Ex: crabs, lobsters, crayfish, wood lice, fish lice
Mollusks: Soft bodies, but may have shells.
Ex: snails, slugs
Chilopoda :
Ex: centipedes, millipieds
Now that the zoology lesson is over.

One of the first MST3K episodes I every saw in its entirety. And still one of the funniest if you ask me. I do wish the climax of the movie had more of an all out battle against the mantis. Instead it dies essentially off screen thanks to A LOT of insecticide.

Man eating worms are featured in "Squirm", a movie I don't recommend as it's not really scary, interesting or anything but uncomfortable. Watching the people being overwhelmed by masses of killer worms just makes you feel "Eeeyyyeeeewwww! " uncomfortable, not scared. The characters are mostly so awful you yawn at their deaths.

no that cover image is not from the film...the bee FX in that one are like someone layered a sheet of glass on the screen and let bees crawl over it.
I kept bees for 2 years. still have the bee-suit! I did not die, however I got badly stung on the ankle one time
also
SLUGS

are slugs actually bugs? well it rhymes, so I say... maybe
directed by the same guy who did PIECES, but it's nowhere near as good
a girl gets slugged to death in Fulci's AENIGMA as well...
the slug's secret weapon is its amazing speed. trying to outrun a slug is a fool's game.

Hallows mentioned FIRST MEN IN THE MOON earlier.
There's a thing they call 'Steam Punk', which I don't really get into, but this film came out waaaay before that, and is good literal filming of any of HG Welles work.
And Harryhausen's work is fantastic, of course!
Yeah, this was harryhaussen's best, IMO.
I also liked earth vs the flying saucers...

CATWOMEN OF THE MOON (1953) and it's remake (!) MISSILE TO THE MOON (1958) both had a giant spider. (It's even the same prop!). I believe the same spider was used in MESA OF LOST WOMEN (1953).

TARANTULA was made in 1955.
CAT WOMEN was made in '53. Universal wouldn't borrow a s**tty prop from some z budget film. They made they're own. And the Tarantula prop looks so much cooler.
The reason they look similar is because they're giant tarantulas! But that's about it.
