I got this idea from the thread on the 50 worst movies.

1 Pulp Fiction (1994)

I'll get this started with one of my all time favorites.

This is endlessly rewatchable and is amazing as all hell. I've seen this at least 20 times and it holds up greatly since it was released.

3) The Dark Knight (2008). It's not that the Joker is the best movie villain, or that Heath Ledger was ever a "great" actor, but Heath Ledger's Joker is one of the best movie villains to come along in years, and Heath Ledger's particular performance here was the best one of his career; one that no other actor could have pulled off. He had the best dialogue: "If you're good at something, never do it for free." " Freak? Why don't we cut you up into little pieces and feed you to your pooches, hmm? And then we'll see how loyal a hungry dog really is! It's not about money, it's about sending a message. Everything burns!"

Heath Ledger's performance made us forget how wooden and bland that Christian Bale's was, ridiculous growling voice besides. Coupled with a wonderful pace of the movie's plot that didn't allow much time to get bored, this ended up being one of the most rewatched movies in my collection. I would have rated Mad Max (1979) above this one but the rules of the topic say "since 1980." :cheers:

4. Raiders of The Lost Ark (1981)

The first film I saw where I thought that I was part of it, rather than just sitting watching the thing. I remember how angry I was when Chariots of Fire* won the Best Picture and Best Score Oscars instead of this one.

5. Aliens.

I'd have put in Alien, but if I recall rightly that was 79. Cameron takes the taunt, haunted house in space thriller of Alien and makes a war movie out of it. Predictable as hell, but entertaining and very rewatchable. There was only something like 6 or 8 alien suits and in one scene they are all on-screen at the same time, but you'll think there are a whole lot more.

This is one of the most definitive horror movies ever made. I've seen this many times. The first which was in a lobby of a hotel when I was much younger,

Jurassic Park

This is the very first film to utilize CGI imagery in it. Those effects, along with the practical ones still hold up today.

It also spawned a film trilogy and was revived with Jurassic World and it's follow up, with third one coming out.

The Matrix

The Matrix received Academy Awards for Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing, Best Visual Effects and Best Sound.
There's a lot that can be said about The Matrix. It mixes philosophy, martial arts with innovative special effects ie "bullet time" perfectly.

The first time I saw this I thought it incredibly strange when a friend brought it over. Ever since then however, I've laughed my ass off at this. While Jeff Bridges won an Academy Award for his role Crazy Heart, he will always be best known as The Dude in this masterpiece.

It's not scary. The gremlins are cool, and the film has a LOT of humor. It also has a wonderful insightful script, and it's one of the first films I can think of with a true "easter egg" in it, probably several. Definitely JOE DANTE's best film. KEYE LUKE reappears near the end of the film to retrieve his mogwai, glances at horrors transpired in a TV news broadcast and says "You teach them to watch television..." (is he Santa Claus...?) 36. The Crow.

Brandon Lee in a role that would have no doubt seen him join the ranks of the top action stars of the day had it not been for his unfortunate accident. From a directors standpoint, this is my favourite movie and one of the few that I could sit and discuss how shots were framed, symbology and whatnot without getting bored.

I've rewatched this a zillion times since I first saw it on HBO cable TV in 1989. Normally these types of movies bore the heck out of me so I might maybe watch them once or twice, but this movie is flawless. I still love the ending when his ghost talks to the little boy at the memorial. :cheers:

I've rewatched this a zillion times since I first saw it on HBO cable TV in 1989. Normally these types of movies bore the heck out of me so I might maybe watch them once or twice, but this movie is flawless. I still love the ending when his ghost talks to the little boy at the memorial. :cheers:

Yeah, I bit my lip on a couple. But my problem with AVENGERS is not that I think they are terrible choices, it's that I hate to see a big Hollywood tentpole franchise taking up 3 spots (I wouldn't mind 1 spot so much). So since I think LOTR is much, much better than Marvel, I feel obligated to use up slots to make sure all three of them get on, too.

I'd really sort of prefer only one LOTR movie on the list to make room for more non-franchise movies, but if there are going to be three Avengers movies (yuck) and two Star Wars movies on the list, then I think this whole trilogy belongs.

Most people rate Peter Jackson's movies much higher than I do. Some of the things he did to those stories are really terrible.

If Jackson had stayed true to the book, then there would have had to have been a proper fourth movie in order to give us the real ending when Saruman's remnant armies invade The Shire. While I would have preferred this, most regular moviegoers probably wouldn't have, since popular opinions tend to prefer their movie franchises wrapped in neat little trilogies and prepackaged conveniences.

"Nothing Lasts Forever" (1984)
Tom Shiller (of SNL fame) made this nearly flawless film ...that has yet to be officially released. There was a digital "leak" of a decent copy a couple of years ago. So it is floating around on peoples computers/hard drives. Most the reviewers say it is an accessible version of "Brazil" (1985) and I would agree with that sentiment - Even though it was made a whole year before. Zach Gafinoffis "golly gee Whiz" performance is flawless. He pulls it off without a trace of irony or self awareness whatsoever. That alone grounds this absurd [city bus] journey to the Moon that much more enjoyable.
