Title: Skills you have which aren't needed anymore?
Post by: Trevor on July 29, 2021, 01:34:32 AM
Film projection for me: the last time I threaded a projector was 2013, sadly.

I got out of high school knowing how to run a one color offset press....
Unfortunately, I was such a lousy janitor, they wouldn't let me get a job doing it....

A lot of facets of lithography were already changing at the time....

How to find obscure records and movies in second-hand shops. Now Kristi just orders them on Amazon.  :bluesad:

I took a year of commercial art and printing in Vocational school!

I can send and receive in Morse Code, using a telegraph key.
At least, I could at one time.

There's a store like that in Cape Town called Mabu Vinyl and Digital which does that locally.

There's one or two shops in downtown Richmond trying to keep to art alive....

I am an excellent typist. I'm not talking about just typing words per minute, I mean working an electric typewriter. I can change and fix an ink ribbon like I invented the damned things. Try putting that on a resume nowadays though...

I still have an electric IBM typewriter in my office: wrote the first draft of my film research on that.

I learned how to develop my own film in a dark room.

That's another skill I have which isn't needed in my job anymore: everything is digital.

When I was a kid I was real good at shooting marbles.
But who plays marbles any more, even children?

I don't know who plays them but they have tons on sale on places like amazon. Usually listed under Games: Dice & Marbles. My guess it has become more of an indoor game over the years. That said, my niece collects marbles in glass jars for decoration.

I had mad skills dialing with my thumb on rotary phones  :teddyr:

Marbles are also good for marble runs. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolling_ball_sculpture

On the topic of the thread, I used to know a fair number of MS-DOS commands.

I know some too.  Probably not a whole lot taken on the whole of all the commands that were available, but enough to get around and do some simple batch file scripting.

I'm one of those who has the terminal shortcut on my command bar on my Mac.  Done a bit of work with various Unix/Linux/etc systems over the years so I know some of those commands as well and have done some shell scripting with those.
