Times have changed, actors rarely get naked on screen anymore.
Beat-Em-Up Comedies

A genre made popular by Italian actors Bud Spencer and Terence Hill, spawning countless imitations. It was a 1970s thing and slowly died during the 1980s.
Can you think of other extinct movie genres?
I do not have my finger on the pulse as far as 'stuff that is being done these days' goes, but...
Blaxploitation?
Giallo?
Spaghetti westerns.
"Old Dark House" mysteries. Or "Old Dark House" comedies.
Italian zombie movies. Or Italian cannibal movies.
Slapstick comedy team movies. Such as Laurel and Hardy or the 3 Stooges.

Italy put in a proper shift in the mid 70s to early 80s... then slid into retirement
Women-in-prison
Biker movies
The Mondo movie has gone extinct by virtue that it transformed into 90% of all 21st century TV content!
. Mexican wrestler vs Monsters movies.
. Rubber suited giant monster movies.
. Stop motion animation monster movies.

Northern
Like Westerns, but in Canada or Alaska. Fewer horses, more fur trapping.
You don't see too many musicals anymore. NOT that I'm complaining! Beyond the odd Busby Berkley and ROCK AND ROLL HIGH SCHOOL, not a big fan of musicals.
One of last year's biggest box office movies was Wicked. It's a musical. More musicals from last year:
Mufasa: The Lion King
Moana 2
Emilia Pérez
Joker: Folie à Deux
Mean Girls
what about those 70s 'government paranoia' type movies like 3 DAYS OF THE CONDOR and MARATHON MAN... do they have a modern day equivalent?

Or those '50s paranoia films, where aliens replacing or possessing humans as a blunt metaphor for communism.....

I guess I just don't pay much attention to news about musicals!
There used to be a lot of movies where real people would interact with cartoon characters, but you don't see much of that anymore.
How many? I can only think of five:
Who Framed Roger Rabbit
Cool World
So Dear to My Heart
Song of the South
Pete's Dragon
^ Hmmm...BEDKNOBS AND BROOMSTICKS (1971)
ANCHORS AWAY (1945) has the famous scene with Gene Kelly dancing with Jerry Mouse.

I'm sure theirs more...

Conspiracy Theory (1997) comes to mind. Another is Shooter (2007). There are others but they don't spring to mind right now.
Poliziotteschi
(https://www.nischenkino.de/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/Polizio.png)
Poliziotteschi (Italian: [polittsjotˈteski]; sg. : poliziottesco) constitute a subgenre of crime and action films that emerged in Italy in the late 1960s and reached the height of their popularity in the 1970s.
Sword-and-sandal, also known as peplum

Though I guess last year's Gladiator II falls into that category.

you know you're getting old when around 20-30 years ago counts as 'modern day' :bouncegiggle:
Beach Party films.
the stoner comedy?
Breakdancing movies
Quote from: lester1/2jr on April 02, 2025, 03:25:19 PMBreakdancing movies
Those are probably a subset of the larger genre of "dance fad" movies. They had them for the twist and the lambada too. Who knows, there could be some dance craze in the future that inspires more.

There's a South African stoner comedy called BORDERING ON BAD BEHAVIOUR where three soldiers on opposing sides who are wanting to kill each other become friends overnight because of a bag of shared weed :bouncegiggle: : wink:

ok 2014, vaguely recent... I mean 'marrawannah' will always be a film thing but as a primary focus I think it tailed off. HOW HIGH is the most recent one I remember seeing
i feel like a lot of anti-school/teacher movies were popping up in the 70s and even later into the 90s, but i havent seen ANY of those in recent years! stuff like rock n roll highschool. i guess its not as acceptable to show a school blowing up in america these days

Anti-School/teacher comedy movies were big here in Germany in the 1970s

(Hooray! The School is Burning!)
^ and yep, some of these featured burning schools, too.
Drug warning films like Reefer Madness and Cocaine Fiends
Rural sex comedies like The Pigkeeper's Daughter, Tobacco Roody, and Country Cuzzins
Bermuda Triangle, Loch Ness Monster and Bigfoot movies
Over the Edge was the sickest anti school one
Burgomaster, there have been more Bigfoot movies in the 21st century than there were in the 20th! It's a veritable Sasquatch renaissance!
South African made ninja and martial arts films sadly. Most of those were fun to watch. 😊😊🐢
Not too many jungle adventure movies anymore.
Not to many pro war pictures, like GUNG HO (1943) or the GREEN BERETS (1968) making the rounds.

I swear there's a recent one on DVD in my local hmv literally called BIGFOOT with a quote saying "If you like Bigfoot movies you'll love this!" on the box :bouncegiggle:

They probably could've cut right to the chase and written "If you're M.10RDA you'll have no choice but to watch this!"
hah. wouldn't class myself as any kind of expert but I've seen a bunch... my fav is the one that starts off with students in a classroom learning about them. late 60s or early 70s?
There's a bunch that begin with students getting lectured about Bigfoot. Heck, it's almost an extinct sub-genre all its own!
yeah I think I have actually seen at least one other that does that... what a niche.
Blaxploitation and Bruceploitation movies were products of their times, and are very few and far between now.
Oddly, these genres had a kind of renaissance in the hip hop action movies which came and went in the early 2000s, the first of which I know is Romeo Must Die (2000) starring Jet Li and Aaliyah.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w500paj_MPU
Another was Cradle 2 The Grave (2003) starring DMX and Jet Li.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJ2yu0PEkoI
Exit Wounds (2001) starred Steven Seagal and DMX, and was one of the last halfway decent Steven Seagal movies.

These movies mostly served as vehicles to pair a martial artist with a hip hop or RnB singer, cashing in on the popularity of Hong Kong choreography in Hollywood which began with The Matrix (1999).
