Title: movies that namecheck another movie
Post by: zombie no.one on August 05, 2026, 02:48:50 PM
I was watching ALIEN AUTOPSY (2006) and there's a scene where one of the two main characters tries to get someone to buy a pirated dvd copy of TIMECOP (1994)

any other examples of this phenomenon?

(I mean the title of the movie has to be said out loud... I'm not talking about movies where you can see a poster for another movie, or where another movie happens to be playing on a tv screen, etc)

There's a South African film where the producer shows the actors in that film watching a film that the producer directed a decade previously 😄🐢

In The Lost Boys: The Tribe (2008) the Mom character wants to have a movie night, she rented and is holding up the DVD of The Goonies (1985). I believe she also says the title out loud.

That John Cusack movie Must Love Dogs. You know that film where he makes old time canoes for a living. I mean seriously. Who does that? I don't even think someone like Bill Gate's son could get away with that. Hey babe come over to my lovely pad. Oh what do you do for a living? Oh I make these wonderful old time canoes. Yeah it's a modest profession..

Yeah sure. In what universe. Well anyway. Oh yeah Must Love Dogs John Cusack keeps talking about Dr. Zhivago. I mean gets to the point where it is halfway annoying. Like the whole movie is a Dr. Zhivago cult or something. It's like seriously. You mean you want to live in Russia when that whole Bolshevik revolution was happening. There was obviously a dark side to that, it wasn't just all about some lovey dovey romance. Must Love Dogs — Dr. Zhivago. Umm..That's all I can think of. I will be on the look out for this though. Do I get money or points though if I can keep coming up with them? Does the movie Timeline ever reference a Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court? Or are we just supposed to know that that is what the movie is supposed to be?

I was going to say Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles (1990) When Rafael or one of the Ninja Turtles is walking around you can see a Poster or a Movie Theatre Marquee banner for Critters. But you say that doesn't count. Ok. Well I always thought that part of the movie was humorous and I fantasize that it is like an easter egg or something for some future Ninja turtles movie where they have to fight the Critters.

yeah I think we did have a thread once dedicated to movies which feature posters of other movies...

we definitely had one for movies where you see someone watching another movie on a tv screen.

that kind of thing seems a bit more subtle and incidental though. whereas if they're actually saying the other movie's name out loud
then it's cleary a more intentional and direct reference (erm...or something?  )

It seems like you are sort of inferring there is a bit of a sociopath connotation with the "naming" or name checking — like there is something more behind it..

Yeah I just figure when I watch a movie and the characters are sitting around a TV and watching something that most people recognize, that it is just filler. Although sometimes it is meant to be ironic because of whatever the movie is about. Like Fright Night they are watching some Dracula Movie with Christopher Lee.

One thing that I learn about Internet forums, and it seems especially ones dedicated to movies is that ideas are brought up that would make for some really solid lectures or even a college course. Instead of just Bleh, "History of Film." Or History of Avant Garde.

I feel like there should be something called the Jaws exception Clause. Like in Name checking, because I know I can't count the amount of times I have seen some monster movie and Jaws is used as a mocking metaphor for what they are up against. Usually the movie in subject is way inferior to Jaws and so they use something that is a superior product to I guess give theirs more credibility. So it is whatever. I don't know if there is a blurred line between name checking and riffing. Because Jaws is used so many times in horror movies that it is almost like a riff. Funny though, I can't off hand think of a movie where the characters blurt out Jaws as some comparison or whatever about what they are about to face. But I know I heard it! Usually when I do hear it I immediately click that movie off. To me that is like that movie is saying, we have no ability to stand on our own we have to riff something..

Full Metal Jacket at the End they sing the Mickey Mouse Theme song. That stands out in my mind. That's not really name checking though. But more like something I guess ingrained in the cultural milieu or mindset. The movie Fantasia has Mickey Mouse but I don't believe they ever sing the Mickey Mouse theme song in it. The TV show/TV movie, whatever V there is a scene where a High School or college band is playing the theme to Star Wars. I kind of wondered when I watch that — how they are allowed to do that, because of copyright. Unless Name checking or gymnastically promoting something else (which I guess that is what that was) is encouraged. It's a folic community. Ace Ventura whenever he feels like it, he can be William Shatner and do the impersonation. Supposed to denigrate..But what has stood the test of time. Ace Ventura (either of them) or Star trek? That's easy.

Masters of the Universe the 2026 one. They reference or Name check The Highlander. Like my friend OldSoul on another forum I go to says, "Not too much else to say about that."
Basically..A lot of building up angst going on about Masters of the Universe and since this is a Bad movie forum I thought that I would mention that too. About the jokes in the movie. The Highlander was a movie made in 1986 with Christopher Lambert. And it sort of made the term Kurgan famous or infamous. Although if you are an archaeologist I am sure that there is some disgruntlement about that because they have known about Kurgan for a long long time. Funny how the Kurgan culture got replaced by the so called Indo European culture. And then now lately, as per Martin Furholt and Eske Willerslev and Joe Rogan (yesh I feel like I am losing a year of my life anytime that I have to mention that guy's name. But I literally feel like I have to here and it might be relevant to the whole name checking Phenomenon. Joe Rogan and those types are instrumental in that.) and so thousands of others they call it the Yamnaya.

I want my own royalties. For having to put up with Michael in Victorville on the savage nation, and all of the books he has written but has never been able to prove.

It's like WTAF. Please no one ever Name check The Highlander again. Gosh. I love The Highlander.

wait... a movie with He-Man in it namechecks THE HIGHLANDER? ...do they have Netflix in Eternia now?  :bouncegiggle:

It may not surprise you to learn I am partial to HIGHLANDER 2: THE QUICKENING. (well, some of it... there are some amazingly bad lines of dialogue to savour)
Title: Re: movies that namecheck another movie

I have never seen it. But there has been a steadily building case that I should see it. I have a bad movies sequels list that I am working on and unfortunately Lawnmower Man II just barely nudges out Highlander 2. But it is possible that I will like them both about the same because I am still kind of forever in grace in 1990s movies. Sometimes I can't tell the difference between the bad ones and the good ones (unless you are talking about The Arrival. I would never suggest The Arrival 2 to anyone, I would feel like I would be committing a legitimate crime.)

Yeah on IMDB it says Sean Connery is in Highlander 2. No one can spoil that for me, I will have to see for myself. And I definitely will. Anytime I look in a magazine or see Sean Connery's face it is like he is secretly speaking to me to either See Highlander 2 or Rising Sun.

Netflix. You really should have been a scriptwriter. I believe at least for the new He-man movie. That line alone is funnier and more succinct than any of the jokes in the movie. And there were probably about fifty. I am waiting for someone on youtube to do a Joke counter or Failed Joke counter for He-man. Maybe I am knocking on it too hard, but that one with the "Butt Worms" was abysmal. I went to film school and I took a scriptwriting class. I know that if I wrote something like that I would have been ridiculed or told to revise it. I read cheesy comic books too and that wouldn't have made it for those either. You got me. Like Bill Paxton famously says in Aliens "I just work here." Ha.

Beetlejuice mentions The Exorcist. Trying to remember if Night of the Living Dead is mentioned by name in Return of the Living Dead or if it's a more oblique reference. Return of the Jedi is part of a discussion in Clerks.

ugh, makes it sound like it's from the Michael Bay school of '80s-toys-cartoons-to-movies' adaptations then... (or at least inspired by). don't know why everything with a supposedly retro crowd appeal has to be 'grossed up' these days

I believe there are six writers credited on the new MOTU. At least some of them seem to know what they are doing but there are lines and moments that are discordant and feel very much like Too Many Cooks seasoning the broth. It was definitely a situation where they threw everything against the wall and hoped something would stick.

Ok..Spaceballs. Name Check Rambo. Joan Rivers in the C3P0 Parody telling Princess Vespa, Oh come on you ain't Rambo!
Now there was a 2008 movie called Rambo. And this is a Star Wars kind of movie, so she was being prophetic possibly? Either way I will give her the waive and say she meant Rambo: First Blood Part II.

Yeah I mean I am not knocking the writers for Masters of the Universe. I am glad that there is employment for these people. Especially in this economy, it is great I guess — I would rather them working on this than I guess doing something else.

Good analogy about the Broth. You are making me hungry now. I guess I really don't sweat this stuff anymore. I have gotten to where — if a movie is 25 percent watchable then I can literally create the other part of it. Almost like CRISPR gene editing. Of course me doing that hurts the rewatch ability of it. But hey alls fair in love and war. It is like when I saw C. Thomas Howell recently at some theatre talking about himself and his movies. And someone asked him about Gettysburg. She said she was a teacher and that she showed Gettysburg to her class. And C Thomas Howell said, "Oh YOU Poor thing!! That..Uh..That is like over three hours long!" I'm like dude, Gettysburg may actually be your best movie. I wonder what is going on in these people's heads. Like maybe it is something worse than a broth and perhaps there such a thing as too much motivation. Maybe there is some truth to these theories about how these people are trying to erect the Tower of Babel again..I sort of miss the good old days when the discussion was about too much violence in movies. Now the discussion is about how we have to be the Missionaries for hollywood because they care more about private investment than telling a story.
Someone needs to do a Golden corral smash on these people's heads.

Stupid but semi charming poem I just read about oysters. I mean why can't these Bay type movies do something fun like that?

I've seen Office Space like twelve times and I don't remember them saying anything about SuperMan III. I remember an Eddie Murphy comedy skit once where he mentioned it because he was doing a joke about Richard Pryor. Seems like I remember some love romance movie. Maybe Harry Met Sally or perhaps some Woody Allen movie where they keep referencing or name checking Harold and Maude. Gosh I wish I could remember what that movie was! Maybe Annie Hall?

Fast and the Furious (One of them.) One of the ones with Dwayne Johnson or the Rock. And I am pretty sure that Dwayne Johnson isn't in all of the Fast and Furious movies. This one is going to take some work. And I might be wrong about it. But he or whoever his character is, goes to Britain and possibly London I am guessing. And he goes to a Police Station and he chauvinistically tries to take over the operations of the Police station. Kinda of a hilarious scene to me actually, and I am not really a fan of the Fast of the Furious. Like I said I will have to do some work to find out which one this is.

The Police Chief (I am assuming) gets up as Dwayne Johnson is trying to shake his hand and he says something like, "Well Wook at what we Ave Here! If It isn't Captain America!" Sarcastically as if he has just been greeted by the Prime Minister of Montenegro. Pretty funny (funnier and more on spot than the Highlander Name check. In my opinion.) Actually I think the line would have been funnier in my opinion if the Police chief would have said "if it isn't the Prime Minister of Montenegro." Maybe the Rock would have punched him in the face, who knows. Captain America is actually pretty endearing and complimentary.

some of these seem to be crossovers between a character being namechecked, and that character's had a movie named after them therefore it's a 'movie' namecheck... not sure how to deal with that aspect tbh.

My ranking from best to worst:

1. The House on Sorority Row (1982)

A stylish, atmospheric standout with real visual craft and a killer reveal that actually pays off. Its dreamlike finale and polished campus setting give it a prestige edge over most early‑80s slashers.

2. The Dorm That Dripped Blood (1982)

Bleak, grainy, and committed to its nihilistic tone, this one earns its place through sheer mood. The off‑season campus emptiness and grim finale make it one of the era's more haunting deep cuts.

3. Graduation Day (1981)

Chaotic, energetic, and weirdly charming, it's a slasher that sprints through its own gimmicks with jittery editing and personality. Messy, yes, but unmistakably memorable.

4. Final Exam (1981)

A slow‑burn campus slasher that leans into normalcy before breaking it apart. Its plain, almost faceless killer gives the violence a disturbingly everyday quality.

5. Splatter University (1984)

Cheap, uneven, and stitched together with abrupt pacing, this one struggles to find a consistent tone. The twist lands, but the journey is rough and often incoherent.

Sorry for going off topic. Please continue with the namechecks

Shaun of the Dead I remember some scene where they were throwing dinner plates like weapons at the zombies and sort of like chinese stars to actually kill the zombies. I thought it was kind of a homage to Oddjob from James Bond. I can't think of any name checking off hand with the zombie movies. Shaun of the Dead might be one of the better ones. I hope one day people can ween me back into liking zombie movies again.

that's one of my favourite scenes in any film of this millennium I think. genius!

I'm also not really enthused with newer zombie flicks... can't think of a single one since SOTD that I've enjoyed (not that I've seen many). the late 70s wave really nailed how to do that genre.

This was picked up and distributed by Troma, which explains a lot. Apparently the film was shot in 1981, with additional scenes added in 1982 to make it longer (original duration was 65 minutes).

I remember there being two versions released to VHS, the R-Rated and unrated cut. The unrated included minimal more blood.

I did buy the DVD because it was very cheap but yeah, Splatter University sucks, no matter what format or version you're watching.

not a movie namecheck, but I saw the new I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER reboot thingy, and 'bloodydisgusting.com' gets a reference... not a website I've ever looked at, but it's really weird hearing movie characters name real sites. it takes me out of the movie a bit.

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back...Jay mentions that Ben Affleck is great in Phantoms and they visit the set of Good Will Hunting 2 and see Wes Craven directing a sequel to Scream

Could add pretty much every Scream movie. Part 2 they mention film sequels like Godfather 2, Terminator 2, Aliens...

SCREAM series wins this thread then I guess  :bouncegiggle:

next time I watch THE LAST HORROR FILM I'll listen out for any namechecks... half of it takes place at the actual Cannes film festival

- weird fact about that movie... the movie its star Caroline Munroe is supposedly the star of, in the film, is called 'Scream', and you also see a poster for a non-existent movie called 'Stab' at some point as well  :buggedout:

Soylent Green? Maybe so much of Soylent Green is happening in reality that that is what the name check is really about. Kind of like if you say Frankenstein in a movie or whatever, you aren't really talking about a movie but some concept that is actually happening. I have definitely been questioning the food that I eat lately. Reminds me some of this guy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlkbWICmAj0) talking about the Bruce Effect. Times like this when I wish I didn't fail that MEPS exam and could have got into the Air Force. I have asthma     I sort of feel like just getting by is not good enough. Especially if Soylent Green is coming! Baton down on my near comotose state and James Cameron documentaries where he claims that the Exodus in the bible was actually the Hyksos shepherd king expulsion. It's like James Cameron, love ya, but stick to the movies!

there is absolutely loads of stuff in the commercial foodchain which should never be within a zillion miles of our digestive systems, I don't think that's even a conspiracy theory at this point... have we gone full Soylent Green? wouldn't actually surprise me... shame I love processed food so much  :twirl:

steeerrrrrrring it back on topic, there's a movie called SON OF RAMBOW. the plot is 2 kids try to make a movie inspired by FIRST BLOOD.

they definitely watch bits of it on a tv, and their home-recorded VHS copy has FIRST BLOOD scrawled on it... I just can't remember if anyone says the title. I'm leaning towards yes

It could be though.

Man, if Soylent Green is something that is continuously name checked in a movie, that might be something to take more than a casual note of. And perhaps name checked in a Bad movie is more relevant than a good one.

I looked on this fandom (https://twister.fandom.com/wiki/Dorothy) thing about Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz and it doesn't really say much. Oh yeah Elton John name checks (sorta) Wizard of Oz, "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road." If you want to talk about genius it is that song. Is there any movie that name checks The Carlton? That Alfonso Ribeiro trademark dance from Fresh Prince? I could have sworn that there was. I feel like I am in some kind of false world delusion right now. Not quite that this is a pointless world but almost like Dante's Inferno. And so yeah, I was slightly off with Shaun of the Dead. They throw records at the zombies. Not dinner plates. My guess is that those records were either made at Area 51 or they were lacquered with the same stuff that Donald Trump puts in his hair. Does Ghostbusters II count when that mean obnoxious kid stands in the face of Dan Akroyd and says he wants to hear He-man. Because "you guys are full of crap." He-man aka Masters of the Universe?

^ I think that would fall under 'character first, movie second'.

fine to mention stuff like that though, s'all interesting... and this isn't a Top 100 list (thank goodness)

I randomly found out the other day there's a 1986 movie called THE PRINCE OF BEL AIR... it only has 10 user reviews on IMDb despite starring some big names like Kirstie Alley and Robert Vaughn. it seems to have zero connection to the Will Smith show?

feel like I'm slipping into  my own false world delusion here as well  :bouncegiggle:
