Title: Bad Taste
Post by: Greg B on February 03, 1999, 11:57:41 PM
Believe it or not, this film was improvised over four years of filming. Though not as good as the pure gore of Dead Alive, Peter Jackson scores with this superb horror flick which he both directs and acts in.

I spent from July 1998 to November 1999 studying at the University of Auckland in Auckland, NZ. After a few weekend trips and a two week spring break I managed to see much of both islands. I mentioned all of that because you need to know that there are many, many sheep in New Zealand...especially the South Island. The random act of violence against the sheep in this film really isn't so random in the context of the culture...I heard more then a few 'jokes' about doing something like what happens in this movie in real life. It sure is fun talking with Kiwi's about Peter Jackson, too. There doesn't seem to be that much confidence in Jackson taking on the "Lord of the Rings" series. But EVERYBODY sure seems to like Meet The Feebles {described as "sick" by many a kiwi), Dead Alive and Bad Taste.

Bad taste is done in bad taste and I love it. it is gory, funny, and stupid. Which means a job well done. If you like
movies like evil dead series where they were purposely messed up,and hag gags, then see this cult classic. I bought it on dvd yesterday uncut version it rules.
This movie will either be up your alley or just a stupid be movie, but I don't think it is a dumb movie(just pure genieus). peter jackson was a good director in this and actor. Way to go playing both robert and derek on the cliff very believable.  11 mins- Derek has an alien hanging upside down over the cliff. It is a bearded peter jackson.
19 mins- aliens use thier buddy as a battering ram
23 mins- That dude has a sledge hammer inbedded into his skull
29 mins- derek is rolling down a tall cliff splat.
36 mins- Dereks still alive
47- yum blue vomit
71 mins rpg (anti-armor weapons)
79. random act of violence on a sheep.
this is just some the things to watch out for.
So if you like b-movies, gory movies, or just plain like peter jackson at least rent it first. For those of you who are watching it for the first time watch out for these scenes.

The first time I saw Bad Taste I were eleven and I alomst vomited. Now four years later I saw it again and love it. One of the best splatter/humour movies ever made. I can see it over and over again and I still laughes at it.
My favourite.

Recently, I purchased this film at a Cinema One store in Brantford, and I must say, it was much more than I expected. The green vomit scene was a tad bit uncomfortable to watch, but all in all, Bad Taste was definately worth the money I shelled out to buy it.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            Taste was definately                                                                                                                                                                        tly worth the money I shelled out

I've seen literally over 100 B-movies and really cheezy horror movies, and I'd say this ranks in my top 10. Damn great movie! There's plenty of cheezy gore, humor, and just all out nasty stuff in this movie. Hooray for Peter Jackson!!!

Bad Taste is a wicked film. When I first hired it on video I thought it was going to be another one of those cheap 80's movies which totally sucked. Boy was I wrong this movie kicked ass from start to finish I can see why it turned into a cult classic. Since First watching it I'm sure I've seen it many more times and would definately be worth getting on DVD if it is ever released on DVD.

Amazing film considering that it was made over 4 years of weekends, they didn't get any funding until it was almost finished and Peter Jackson added ALL the gun flashes HIMSELF by HAND directly on to the film! Makes me proud to be a New Zealander.

Absolutely amazing film. Peter Jackson is a gift to Horror/Comedy's. Gore, action, comedy you name it this film has it. I bought the video cheap from a sale and i have watched it countless times still laughing at the infamous scene with the green goo drinking and when they kill one of the aliens and he says 'I've just cleaned there'. Personnaly Brain dead [Aka Alive-Dead] was better but still its a Must Watch film if you are a fan of Peter Jackson.

Cheated!!!! I feel CHEATED.
I trusted the comments, which many of you left in regards to this movie, as well as the great comments left by the Badmovies.org creator.  Every other time I had purchased movies off this site I have found them to be incredible, such as with THE STORY OF RICKY and DEAD ALIVE (WHICH ARE MY FAVOURITE MOVIES) but this piece of filth was terrible, and I cant understand why you all enjoyed it?  The story was slow, the violence was boring and for one of the first times in my life I actually stopped the movie near the end and said "To hell with this" and walked away.  My hard earned money was wasted...sadly.  I would advise that anyone else thinking of purchasing this to think again and choose from another one from this amazing site!!
I will watch this movie again to see if I will enjoy it the second time.

Everyone must see this Peter Jackson debut, a real 'stinker'..Which in b-movies means of course a really good flick, which is what Bad Taste is! It was a bit different than I thought at first, but it sure was great! Everybody, this is a movie you have to see! Even the videocassette-cover tells it all, an alien with a Kalashnkikov giving you the finger with an evil grin on it's face. Oh yeah!

I'm a huuuuggeee Peter Jackson Fan!!! Bad Taste is the first of his movies to enter my collection! Derek was an automatic favorite of mine who couldn't exist without the acting talents of peter jackson. You really have to respect a guy who made his whole creature supply in his mum's oven. If you love this movie as much as me leave me  a message on instant messager at braindead dm!!!

I first got hipped to "Bad Taste" thru Rick Sullivan's reviews on the first and only "Gorgon Video Magazine" way back in '88 or so - Four Skulls, highest rating. My VHS copy was so popular that a "friend" sort of "borrowed" it. Then on Halloween '98 I saw a different version at an "art house" in the University District of Seattle, which had one brief gore scene that wasn't on the video version.
Anyway, I've seen "Bad Taste" at least twelve times - I love it. It's one of the most inventive, original and uproarious splatter films EVER! It's required viewing for anyone in my orbit, along with "Street Trash," "Daughter of Horror," and "Spider Baby." I have yet to see Jackson's "Heavenly Creatures," but I'm sure his upcoming "Lord of the Rings" films will be great.
Stay Sick.

I finally saw BAD TASTE from an old Magnum Video copy. Unfortunately, alot of refference books claimed that the Magnum Video version was uncut and "Unrated". Sorry to say this but the books were wrong. Before the film started it had the R rating banner on the film. Basically, if the film was released with the "Unrated", and BAD TASTE was issued in limited theatres with the "Unrated", then it would not have the R rating banner on it. Magnum picked up a cut R print that was released in more domesticated theatres.

Nonetheless, I am now a Peter Jackson fan. Though BAD TASTE was shot on a gritty 16mm camera on a budget of $250,000, it just makes BAD TASTE look like TITANIC on a much more larger budget. The gore was fantastic as ever and the acting was good. The humor was even more authentic that the gore effects. BAD TASTE is played to be a parody and it all works. I just can't wait for Anchor Bay to release BAD TASTE on video and DVD. Now all I need to do is watch MEET THE FEEBLES and I will be all set. Also, I watched BAD TASTE and THE FRIGHTENERS all in one night and I feel that THE FRIGHTENERS is pretty good film from Mr. Jackson.

I don't love BAd Taste. I enjoyed it and have immense respect for P. Jackson.  The movie is a funny gore film and that's it.  Pleeeze don't call it art, chuckleheads. I think Jackson would give you a chainsaw enema for that sort of bollocks.

I loved it! You may not agree, but, I think this is funnier and better than Meet The Feebles. This movie was hillarious! The very fake looking blood and gore in Bad Taste made me laugh a lot! My brother kinda hated it, though. He only watched about 20 minutes of the film and left the room. So what if the blood looks nothing like real blood? It's still a great movie! If you want to have a good laugh, then rent Bad Taste right now. It's a very cheesy movie but it is pretty good in my opinion. I might go see all three of the Lord of The Rings movies when they all come out. I want to rent Dead Alive but I'm going to try and look for the unrated version.

No, the funniest part is when one of the guys hits the alien over and over and over then kicks him in the balls.  The alien just falls to his knees in pain.  I was in tears, almost even more so than the part with Derek and his "bang-bang" noises.

When I first watched ths movie,I thought it sucked. Then I watched it again,And HOLY s**t! this movie rules.some of the best humor and gore ever,up there with evil dead.the blood in the movie is something like strawberry syrup I think, cause in my film production class at school I made a GORY movie using that as blood and it looked pretty close to the blood used in bad taste.I didn't like dead/alive as much though.I just watched Bloodsucking freaks last night(another b-movie classc) and I think today I am gonna watch bad taste.I should be in school right now,but Bad taste is more important then academics.BAD TASTE RULES!

For me, this film is genius...pure genius...I am a young film maker, and I make exactly that kind of movies (lots of gore, sadism, vulgarity, etc...)...and when I heard that Peter Jackson was given the mission (and money) to make a series of films for Lord Of The Rings....Damn! I was sooo happy for him....he started with stupid films with no budget like this, and he's now an oscar nominated...

I don't expect to go that far...but damn, that somehow gives a light of hope to one day get a name...

Anyways, the film itself is funny (not as much as Dead Alive) and really gory...Jackson made THE two films that I consider the gorier...And this is one of them. This film is a treasure, especially for fans of independent films, fans of gory films, and fans of cheap cheesy films.

by the way, I am an EXTREMELY strong stomach, and the vomit scene really disgusted me...good stuff!

This is one mother of a film, much better than Braindead(Dead Alive), Peter jackson is God, this is one of my favourite films of all time, it also has the best line from a film, "arent i lucky,i got a chunky bit".  Jackson should keep doing these films without blowing 200m on crap like LOTR.

I've seen plenty of bloody films in my days, and this movie is on the list besides "Brain Damage" "Dead Alive" etcetra. I havn't seen this film in AGES, I'd kill to see it again cause I enjoy a good bloody film. But I find the vomit scene disgusting though.

This is nothing short of ingenious.  Peter Jackson is the most innovative film maker i have ever heard of.  If the readers of this have the bad taste limited edition dvd watch the "Good Taste Made Bad Taste" documentary.  It opened my eyes to this incredible director.  Comparing this movie to Evil Dead, which was roughly the same budget, Bad Taste is a masterpiece.  Before regarding the special effects as hokey, know that the film was made on a $50,000 budget and many of the special effects were made in his mom's oven.  Enjoy!

I own this movie on video, unfortunately, like it's brother "Meet the Feebles" I never get a chance to watch it as my mates are ALWAYS borrowing it.

I'll ask for it back and inevitably, no matter who has it the response is..."I have this mate and he has just GOTTA see it!"

Oh and the term "Mate" is nothing to worry about. Stemming mainly from Australia and NZ, it is a term of close friendship among guys. I think the American equivalent is "Buddy".

What attracted me to this originally was the wonderful British feel of it.  I was a huge fan of British entertainment because I'm American but was buying British computer magazines for Amiga in the 80s and 90s.  The locales in this film are sooo British it's great.  But the violence and gore was more than I had ever seen and it gave me a truly strange feeling.  Not bad, just strange.  Unforgetable.

Jackson's character is great!  He's so nerdy but gets the job done.  His troup of actors are great fun to watch.  Glad nobody did to this what they did to Mad Max before it hit our shores (Americanized the soundtrack).  The British accents are great!

Bad Taste is so hilarious...and appauling...and worthy of an air sickness bag!  I'm glad I gave it a chance...renting the box with a weird looking guy flipping me off!!  Ha ha!  And it turned out that it was a very entertaining and nutty gore fest.  Like Dawn of the Dead, it is ODDLY worthy of all its praise even though some-uninitiated-don't understand the big deal.

Wonderful interview on this site with one of the actors.  Anything recent from Jackson on Bad Taste?  Maybe still preoccupied with Hobbits for a Bad Taste 2 or Bad Taste: The Remake discussion...

This was one of those movies that you always heard about when you a kid, but to track down a copy at the age of 14 seemed the hardest task in the world. Then one night at a house party we were thumbing through the video collection and there it was...an original ex-rental copy...oh the joy. I can still remember it now, a dozen drunk teenagers, a dimly lit living room and Bad Taste playing on the VCR. Magic.

Needless to say I have since tracked down my own copy. This is a wonderful debut for Peter Jackson, and a genuine work of passion given the time and limited budeget put into the movie. I advise any aspiring first time directors/movie-makers to grab this film and see what can be done with a little imagination and a small, but dedicated crew. Also worthy of mention is the documentary Good Taste: The Making of Bad Taste, a feature length documentary chronicling the entire shoot, make-up creation and special effects. Excellent stuff, and a classic example of craetivity on a budget, shame all that money and fame has gone to his head.

I've heard of this movie for years, but finally got around to seeing it a few weeks ago. Not as enjoyable or will have as much replay value as "Evil Dead" films, but its cool.

There's more to get than you think, foreign devils (which I mean in the nicest way).

As someone above pointed out, knowing that sheep and sledgehammers really do lie pretty much everywhere in rural New Zealand makes the movie run more comfortably, as does knowing that there's nothing more natural over here than a man calling another man 'mate'.

But it's Robert you should have been looking at. Robert and the rest of the aliens are in fact modelled on a former New Zealand Member of Parliament, Sir Robert Muldoon. The aliens' costumes, including the masks, were intended to make them caricatures of Rob Muldoon, whom I suspect (can't be bothered looking it up now) was Leader of the Opposition for most of the time Bad Taste was being filmed.

And people didn't like him very much.

One of the top five greatest B horror films ever made! (Sorry, but Evil Dead 2:Dead by Dawn and Dead Alive are just slightly better)even still, this is one hell of a movie! Peter jackson gives us what will go down history as one of the all time greats.  You have to give the man a hand for making this one over a period of four years and a budget of 250,000.

I could only imagine what he was thinking: "It took me DECADES to get just one of these, and now this guy who did his first movie about fast food aliens when I was already breaking box-office records gets ELEVEN in one night?? I just love this movie, it's pure chic. I do love the evil dead trilogy & I can't really decide whether chopper chicks in zombie town, or, nazi surfer's must die (troma.. but the people that will read this probably know that already) are better than bad taste. But when I think about it, i just remember the freaky monkey rat thing and think to myself bad taste has it all. A wonderously funny film that takes it back to grass groots gore. I love the creativity of the SFX, it's all too easy these days with technology. These guys made a cracking film that will be loved for a long time, by all generations. BRAVO!!!!

Instant classic. Period.

I do hope you read this before the long list of spoilers preceeding it, telling someone why this movie was so great ruins the shock factor.

And what a shock factor. My faith in 80s schlock is fully renewed.
