As self proclaimed expert in anime, I've seen a couple of weird shows. The Japanese sure makes some interesting stuff.

I have to agree that show is rather messed up. I happen to see it at a doctor's office and asked my wife what it was. She didn't know either but we both agreed that we were creeped out by seeing a dancing sex toy on a kids show.

I have watched Yo Gabba Gabba several times with my oldest and simply can't figure out what the value of the show is aside a few obvious life lessons like "don't bite your friends".

Have to agree with the mention of "The Prisoner" here. That was a strange, strange show. And the finale was perhaps the strangest thing of all. Nobody understands it. Probably not even star Patrick McGoohan, who wrote the thing.

But if we're going to reach back to the 60s, this has to be one of the weirder sitcom ideas:

The Pitts.
A show about a family with the worst luck on Earth. Possessions, demons, werewolves, vampires, imps, trolls, aliens and everything else got hurled at these folks. Brainless fun that was killed about three episodes in.
The lady who played the mom died shortly after the series was shot. A shame because she was a plucky actress and quite fetching in a mousy way.

A couple more Canadian shows. Both were beloved children's classics for over 30 years, and both seem kind of bizarre on closer examination.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWyWWDiYbcc
The Friendly Giant. The second half of this clip has a comedy routine based on the show. I can accept the scale of things being all over the place - the little chairs in the indoor scenes are almost as big as the little houses in the outdoor scenes, making the giant's height vary by a couple hundred feet, not to mention the puppets being gargantuan. But just the weirdness of it. Yes, there is a chicken in a bag hanging from the wall. The chicken and the giraffe were both operated and voiced by the same puppeteer, who put on a high-pitched "I've been kicked in the nuts" voice for one, and apparently just talked normally for the other.
I didn't watch much of that one, but I was a big fan of Mr. Dressup.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uk89rGy_E3s
This was, for the most part, a fun show. The crafts were especially good. The weird thing is ascertaining just what kind of relationship Mr. Dressup and Casey have. Mr. Dressup usually acts like a parent or guardian, yet Casey calls him "Mr. Dressup." And Casey lives with the dog in a little treehouse out on the patio. Can't imagine a social worker would appreciate that arrangement. And they spend their days dressing up in costumes from the "Tickle Trunk" to either act out stories or just mess with each other. Actually, what I really enjoyed about watching the boxed set I bought for my daughter was seeing the things I didn't notice at that age. I'm pretty sure they made up a good deal of it as they went along, and the camera did not stop rolling if somebody tripped over a line. A couple of times, I've heard Mr. Dressup come out with something that just sounded goofy, and when Casey responds, you can tell the puppeteer is rubbing it in. Must have been a blast working on kids' shows from the 60s to the 80s.
i sincerely want MTV to put out a Liquid Telivision dvd box set or something along the lines of that.

"Heil Honey, I'm home."
Basically, it's nazi germany meets I love Lucy.
No, I'm not lying, nor on acid.
It was a weird idea to do something like a 50's american sitcom about adolph hitler and eva braun living together as a amrried couple, with hitler working for a man named hinderberg and living next to a nosey jewish couple his wife was friends with.
In the opening and only aired ep, the hitlers have to entertain mr. chamberlain, an important business partner. Meanwhile, the jewish neighbors scheme to meet mr. chanberlain, while adolf must keep them from disrupting the dinner, offending the client and geting chewed out by mr. hinderburg.

Aliens in the Family
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKuk9w6FRr8&feature=related
You might not really be able to call it a rip-off because it was made by the same people who made the show Dinosuars but that's exactyl what it was. A cash-in. Real people and giant animatronic suits characters.
The plot is that an alien woman falls in love with the man she has abducted (boy, I just realized how creepy the premesis becomes if you break it down to its base elements and remove the word alien.). Anyway, she has several alien kids of her own and they all move to Earth. Much of the "humor" coming from the alien's strange looks and how nobody seems to notice it.
What I remember most about this show is that I was sure it only aired twice. I remember it being on one week and being gone soon after. It turns out they moved it to Saturday morining when I would have been watching much better cartoons and children's programming. Wasn't a good show to begin with and I guess died a quick death.

Without a doubt, one of my favorite shows of all time!
Some shows that I always thought were kind of bizarre was the trend that (mostly) Hanna Barbera had going in the late 60's/70's of taking celebrities, giving them their own cartoons, and putting them in crazy situations that never made sense. Some of the best:
* The Three Stooges as The Robonic Stooges (they had Inspector Gadget-like abilities)
* Harlem Globetrotters in space
* Mr. T as the head of a gymnastics team that solved crimes (greatest show ever!)
* The cast of Happy Days as time travellers
* Laverne and Shirley in the army
* Gary Coleman as an angel (although, to be fair, this one was based on a movie he did)
It was kind of like a strange combination of trying to cash in, but not quite trusting the source material...
I could have contributed this one earlier in the thread, but I'm too lazy to dig through it.
Cop Rock: For those not familiar with it, I'm not lying, this is a police drama musical series from 1990. Yes, a musical. Picture Land & Order but the characters break into song and dance every 5 to 10 minutes. I'm not joking.
This was a very ambitious project created by the man who also did Hill Street Blues. It actually managed to air 11 episodes.
I saw an episode of it in 1990 and I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I saw the title and had to check it out, and what a strange experience. Not sure what they were trying to acheive with that one.

Many of them followed the Scooby-Doo formula, that usually required an ensemble of standard teenage types and a "funny" animal character in a situation that allowed them to travel around and have all kinds of wacky adventures in various settings.
They pretty much designed a new show around existing characters. Even as a kid, that seemed weird. Why does Mork have a pink alien dog? Why is Godzilla following a research vessel around? Where did these other characters come from? Why would the Duke Boys and Boss Hogg race around the world?

Loved it, loved it, loved it. I watched it adamantly for a summer when I was a kid, then it seemed like it never came back on.
Count me in too. I remember Lancelot in his little trenchcoat and his partner, Mata Hairy getting into all kinds of mischief back in the day.
As a kid back in the 70's, it seemed the sky was the limit with kid's shows. As a side-reminder of Lancelot Link, I remember seeing the show on DVD over at Border's awhile back.
Another show I thought was a bit strange (for it's darker, more adult oriented stories) was the
Return To The Planet Of The Apes cartoon. It was no kids' show, it was heavier handed.
And, anyone remember the
Fantastic Voyage cartoon? The closing outro to the show was the eeriest thing I remember...it was as if the lab had a mind of it's own and was doing it's own thing. Great days, great times!

Mtv had a lot of awesomely bizzare stuff in the 90s. I'm still holin' out for a Liquid Televison DVD.
This show was beautiful. I really wish i had some tapes or dvds of it.

Anyone remember "Mr. Smith" that show about a talking ape?

Even weirder than Gene Scott is his porn star wife Melissa Scott. Try figuring out what the hell she is talking about on her televangelist shows. She is fine though...

I remember
Mr. Smith. He was a talking orangutan who wore a three piece suit and was a Washington DC consultant, or something. I think it lasted about three episodes.
The opening credits are around 4:40 - right before the credits for

Really weird and always creeped me out as a kid ( and still does now a bit )
Trigun comes to mind, it's...bizarre IMO. weird guns, funny plot, character interaction is hilarious.
I've searched for it for years. But I can find no record of a 1980's music video show called "Tel-Star." It was a weird show. The only thing is, I can't find any evidence that proves it ever existed! I think it was so bad, that all the copies of the show were destroyed and it's cast and crew possibly killed, lol.
Weird TV Shows?
How about this one?
"We want information...information...information."
"Who are you?"
"The new number five."
"Who is number one?"
"You are number six."
"I am not a number. I am a free man!"
(Laughs insanely)
Yes that twisted old acid trip of a TV Show from the 60s. The Prisoner!
When I first saw this show more than 20 years ago, I couldn't make heads or tails of it. Some guy is taken off the street and made an inmate at some mysterious holding facility. But instead of finding a way out, he is looking for Prisoner Number 1. At the end of the show, he finally meets Prisoner Number 1. But it raises more questions than it answers, Prisoner Number 1 is just some guy in shrouds and a mask so we never see his or her face. And no words are exchanged.
Another really weird show I saw 20 years ago was called Automan. Automan was some computer-generated human analogue brought to life when lightning hits the computer he was in. Now if I remember this correctly, he had a little friend who could change into any vehicle he needed. Also he and his friend could only appear at night.
Now the last weird TV Show I remember from almost 30 years ago was called The Powers of Matthew Star. It starred Louis Gossett Jr. It was all about a teenage boy named Matthew Star who was really the prince of a planet called Quadris conquered by an alien race. Louis Gossett Jr played his legal guardian, teacher and royal attache Walt Shepherd. Matthew looked human in every respect. What made him different from his classmates was he had psychokinetic powers. The show stated that only members of the royal family from Quadris had these powers.

I remember this show!! Nikki Cox... mmmmmmmmmm, that's the kinda sugar papa likes...
Reading thru that Wiki entry, I find it hard to believe that the show ran for four and a half (!) seasons. It was basically a luke warm "Married: With Children" wanna-be from what I remember. Though it did have a talking bunny.

The New Scooby Doo Movies. The second incarnation of Scooby Doo, from the early 70s. A weird hodgepodge of celebrity guests appear as fictionalized versions of themselves and do their shtick while solving a mystery with Scooby and the gang. It's almost surreal.

What I really didn't understand is why this show was created by the same guys who created Married with Children. It was so watered down in comparison. I also didn't understand why Nikki Cox would marry Bobcat Goldwhaite .
Nowhere Man.
It only lasted one season, but it was fun to watch.

I'm sure many of you remember the old animated cartoon series "Fantastic Voyage" from 1968, right? Based on the science fiction movie from 1966, the cartoon was about the C.M.D.F (Combined Miniature Defense Force).
Not only the cartoon itself, but the closing credits as the highlight for this post, as it's as if the lab itself was alive and doing it's own thing when noone was arpound. Watch and enjoy this truly creepy closing!

I used to watch this when it was on...Adult Swim, I think. It made my head hurt because almost every single shot had some bit of weirdness, goof, film reference and so on planted in it, and I couldn't keep up from laughing.
What a weirdo cartoon.. MIGHTY MAN AND YUKK, about a miniaturized superhero and his dog that was so hideous that lifting the tiny doghouse that covered his head (!) would make anything animate or inanimate recoil in horror upon a glance.

Sorry, but you're wrong. Number 6 does get to meet Number 1 eventually and 6 pulls off two masks on 1's face to see his own face, so he has been 1 all along.
