I had one of those free Blockbuster coupons, it was about to expire soon. I decided to try a movie I'd never seen or heard anything about. There it was, I saw the DVD for "Split Second" and it had the exact same cover as it did the VHS box. When I was younger, I'd look at it and sort of wonder what it was about. Since it looked scary I never rented it.

For the first time in a while I was rather excited to see a movie I heard nothing about. I was fighting back temptation to look it up at IMDb and see what they thought. Naw, I wanted to keep it totally my opinion.

So it's 2008 and London has been flooded since 1999 or so. There's a killer going around that's tearing out people's hearts and the seemingly insane Harley Stone (Rutger Hauer) is after it. He get's a partner in the form of quirky Dick Durcan ( Neil Duncan). Quite a bit of action and violence, oh yeah and it's got a sense of humor. Even though the beast looks like a cross between Venom and the Alien the costume's really good and I like it. I also like how the beast's origin is never explained, a mutation seems most likey but they keep talking about how it thinks it's the devil. It's left open for view interpretation. Another great touch is the relationship between Stone and Michelle (Kim Cattrall) when we think Stone is totally unlikable, Michelle shows up in the movie and we see his calm and quiet side.

This movie reminds of "The Hidden", both have a creature on the loose, both have a cop that has an odd acting partner, both have gore and humor and I like them both.

I gotta find "The Hidden" I hope its on DVD.

I just love the way Dick Durcan goes from total health nut yuppie to a coffee swilling chocolate munching clone of Harley.

Ugh. One of those films Rutger Hauer keeps on his vault so nobody watches them.

At least was some fun. It has Hauer chewing scenario (the moment when he tries to interrogate a dog is great), a silly but reasonably fun script and Kim Cattrall showing her boobs. Not bad, but not good either.
Due to the horrifying nature of this film, no one will be admitted to the theatre.

I'm middle of the road on this one.  I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it but, if someone started it up at a get-together I wouldn't complain.

Good: the monster, Kim Cattral's boobs, Rutger Hauer, a few of the scares
Bad: all that crap about the Devil, most of the "buddy" stuff
Meh: the police melodrama
Kneel before Dr. Hell, the ruler of this world!

The only things I remember are Kim's boobs and that everywhere seems to be partially flooded...

Believe it or not, I saw this on theatrical release in 1992 and liked it quite a bit.  I saw it once or twice on video in 1993 or so, but not since that.  I have fond memories of it.  It was one of the last movies Hauer made before he got old and fat.

For some reason, the thing that sticks in my memory is that Kim Cattral's sideburns were just growing back from Star Trek 6. Don't know why, but that's what I remember. Probably just thought it was neat that there was some indication on film that she made this movie almost immediately after the other.
