*spoilers of course*

Thanks to youtube someone apparently posted some clips of the Japanese version of Godzilla 1985. I couldn't help but watch them because, hey I've waiting for a DVD of the original '85.

I saw the opening, ending, and a few scenes from the rampage.

It's weird, 1985 was the second Godzilla movie I ever saw (after Hedorah) so it's quite imprinted in my mind. That also helped me see Godzilla as both a good guy, and a bad guy (or really a rampaging animal more often)

The biggest difference is that there's no Raymond Burr. Strangly I appreciate his presence, not his best acting here but hey I grew up watching the American versions so it was neat that they brought him back after adding him to the 54 movie. (not that I actually support it when they do that kind of stuff)

There are plenty of edits that the U.S. distrubtors did plus quite a few re-arrangements with the Godzilla vs military battle. They moved the scenes with the Russian ship around. That was a surreal feeling. Plus of course they added in dialouge to people that weren't even speaking.(not to mention we made the Russian characters look bad by changing the translations, I already knew that though.)

Heck it turns out that people were gathering around the fallen Godzilla after the Super-X filled him with cadmium misslies. I was like "There are still people there!?" And once Godzilla gets back up for the second round they begin to run, and we moved THAT footage to when G first steps into the harbour after blowing the crap out of the military.

Crazy, after all these years.

However I will admit I think the American credits are on bar with the Japanese version. We had fire tearing out a black back ground to form "Godzilla" in their version it shows a volcano erupting which adds a bit more to the story it seems. The awesome music is in both versions so peace.

And I think it's a draw between the two versions of G falling into the volcano.

Anyway after all these years it's weird to actually see how much they changed of one of the earliest movies you've seen.

C'mon hurry up and realease a DVD with BOTH versions.

I know about THAT, I've been eagerly following the news on it.

I meant the first movie of the 'Heshei' series(kinda), the one with the Super X and evil Godzilla's return.

Unless I missed something on that page all I saw was the very first Godzilla movie.

Ah I see.

When I said 'original' in my first post I mean the Japanese version of "1985"

I assume you've also heard that a bunch of other Showa Godzilla films will be released in November or October?

I heard about this. Is it the ones going to be release by Classic Media? I think 2 of them come out in Nov. Godzilla Raids Again and Mothra Vs Godzilla. I also heard a 6 pack set comes out in 2007.

I already knew about the editing to make the Soviets look like 'commies', but the rest is news to me... I think I like the American opening better though- the music was the important factor.

Another thing, I think a lot of younger, more aggressive Godzilla fans dog Raymond Burr 'cause he's old (well, dead actually...) and fat, but I feel he did a damn good job in both the the original American version of Gojira & the 1985 American version as well... The editing and dubbing suck, but that's almost par for the course. His style really added something, especially to "Godzilla, King of the Monsters" (the American title), because it sort of felt like he was actually there... in the newer, circa 1985 version, it was more evident they shoehorned him in- along with the goofy comic relief at the Pentagon & the none too subtle Dr. Pepper plugs, but Burr still added something.

Boy,this mkes me feel old.The first Godzilla movie I ever seen as a kid was King Kong vs.Godzilla, and it was fairly recent at the time! In fact, the first Japenese movie I ever saw at a movie theater was YOG,MONSTER from OUTER SPACE (onna double bill with some AIP flick). That was circa 1971.

I'm too young to know it firsthand, but I hear they used to show some Godzilla flicks on double bill with some pretty amusing movie choices... The idea of sitting through Godzilla vs. Hedora after Frogs or Godzilla vs. Monster Zero after seeing War of the Gargantuans would be kind of cool, especially in a theater.

I miss double features.I saw Psychic Killer with Race with the Devil. Dracula AD 1972 with King Kong Ecscapes(which was odd...because KKE was quite a bit older) on Halloween.
