Ray Harryhausen!

The ONE MILLION YEARS BC thread got me remebering all the great movies Ray Harry hausuen did. My personal favorite is the SEVENTH VOYAGE of SINBAD,with JASON and the ARGONAUTS in second,and VALLY of GWANGI 3rd. I LOVE them all,though...they just don't make 'em like that no mo'.

I picked THE 7Th VOYAGE OF SINBAD, JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS and FIRST MEN IN THE MOON (I just love the monstrosities Harryhausen lets loose in those movies). Of course, I'm a huge fan of all of Harryhausen's work! I've reviewed IT CAME FROM BENEATH THE SEA, EARTH VS. THE FLYING SAUCERS and 20 MILLION MILES TO EARTH for Scifilm.

It has been so long since I have seen some of his work, I really can't make an honest choice. Now I feel that I have to watch some of his movies. I have never seen Valley of the Gwangi, but I have seen some clips and the effects look spectacular. CGI can't touch Harryhausen.

Anyway, I picked EARTH VS THE FLYING SAUCERS, JASON and THE 7th VOYAGE OF SINBAD.  Really, though, it was just "okay, I'll check three."

I like Earth vs the Flying Saucers and First Men in the Moon.

The 7th Voyage of Sinbad without a doubt, followed closely by Jason and the Argonauts. I just love the design of the cyclopes (cyclopses? What exactly is the plural for that?) in Sinbad, and the fight between the second one and the dragon. And in Jason, I'll never, ever get tired of the scene with Talos. The animation, the blaring brass music, it's just awesome!

Incidentally, I have a framed, autographed version of that photo with Ray and Mighty Joe Young. :)

  I have a special place in my heart for EARTH vs. FLYING SAUCERS.And I get a big kick out of seeing them waste DC.
Also because I believe in ufo's (quit snickerin'!).

I've been enthralled by Mr. Harryhausen for many years, I could have voted for all of the films but I picked Mighty Joe Young, It Came From Beneath the Sea, and The Beast From Twenty Thousand Fathoms. These are my favorite movies but my favorite scenes are from Jason and the Argonauts, the scene on the island with Talos, and the fight with the skeletons. I've got to say that I've never been disappointed by a movie that he's worked on.

I voted for Jason and the Argonauts, 20 Million Miles to Earth and Clash of the Titans.  Probably the Seventh Voyage of Sinbad deserved a higher spot though.  Oh well.

Harryhausen came to my college for a screening of Jason and the Argonauts, which I managed to attend.  He also responded to a number of questions, and showed an animated version of The Tortoise and the Hare, which he started in the 50s and never finished (other animators did the remaining pieces recently using the original models as visual references.)

Then he signed autographs, but I didn't have his book and wasn't willing to buy it at the screening for $50, so oh well.

This was a few months ago, and I'm glad to report that he seemed physically and mentally quite healthy, especially for an 86-year old.

I went with The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, Jason and the Argonauts and The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms. Ray's movies were shown a lot on TV when I was a kid, so I saw them all plenty of times by the time I was ten. Several local channels ran interviews with him or aired short documentary-type shows on his work. Thus, by the age of seven, I could tell you who Ray was, what films he had worked on, how his creatures were brought to life and even spell his name correctly. In a way, he was my first celebrity idol.

I've found the pictures on the internet, and as you've noticed a number are from model kits. Unfortunately I don't have the skill to hand paint the figures so they look real so they aren't mine, though I sometimes wish they were, couldn't display them here anyway, we live in a small home (720 square feet) and there's no room. The wife prefers the regular nic-nacs to models of Godzilla, Rodan etc. On the plus side though after 36 years she now likes "B" movies.

I voted for three, but like everyone else I could've picked them all. Mighty Joe Young is the one I most remember watching when I was a kid.

I also remember watching Valley of Gwangi at the theater when I was a teenager. You need to see it Menard, cowboys and dinosaurs are quite a mix.  The blending of the live action with the stop motion stuff is fantastic in this  one.
