I am watching Silent Hill in bits and pieces, (I have a 15 month old boy and I don't want him watching anything to intense).  I like the film.  Never played the game, but after watching the film, I would love to give the game a whirle.  What do you guys think of the film?

I thought it was one of the better video game based films. The subplot with the husband looking for his wife was a damn waste that really didn't add to the film at all. Besides that I liked it.

The problem with Silent Hill the movie is that there are too many characters running around in it. The first game, at least, was paranoia inducing because there was a limited human cast and a large, sadistic army of critters ready to rip into you. Also, the fact that the movie includes the cult as currently-existing within the Silent Hill universe really takes away from the buried-but-not-quite-gone threat that they pose in the game. In short, the movie takes everything that is suggested in the game and shows it all.
Goblins still exist. Your Grandpa Seth is telling you!

Are you nuts? You tryin' ta turn me into a homo?

Fantastic visuals, uneven performances, absolutely lousy script.

I'm a huge fan of the games and I was completely left down, particularly since I was a fan of the director's previous movie Brotherhood of the Wolf.

I'm with you on that.  The imagery was disturbing and often gut wrenching making it cool to watch.  Alas, nothing is ever tied together in the plot line and too many questions are left unanswered.  Seems to be a huge trend in Hollywood nowadays.

I thought it was pretty cool, but not really as awesome as everybody was making out that it was.

I've never played any of the games, and I haven't seen the movie yet, but I do know that the hero of the first game is a man. Some people don't seem to have much of a problem with changing the main character's gender, but I do. Their 'reason,' last I heard (and correct me if I've been misled), is apparently they thought audiences wouldn't buy a man trying to find his child. Although I'm not a father, I find this very idea insulting. To suggest someone is incapable of something due to their sex is, well, gee... sexist. There'd be a huge outcry from people had it been a female character changed into a male one because the writers felt a female character couldn't pull it off; but when it's a man changed into a woman nobody seems to give a flip. Aren't double standards fun?

And even if it's done for the benefit of the audience, that's still the filmmakers assuming the audience wouldn't buy a male character doing something because he's a man, and assuming that there'd be enough people like this in said audience to justify the change is dumb, in my opinion.

I never played any of the games either, so I had no point of comparison. I found the film to be ok. I suppose as far as films based on video games go, I found it to be more entertaining than most.

The FDA has been looking for a generic name for Viagra. After careful consideration by a team of government experts, it recently announced that it has settled on the generic name of Mycoxafloppin. Also considered were Mycoxafailin, Mydixadrupin, Mydixarizin, Dixafix, and of course, Ibepokin.

Kooshmeister, I think your right on why they changed the character to a women. I remember being pretty ticked about the excuse why they did it. I am a big fan of game's and found that argument so B.S. It alienated fans and It would have been different to have a father looking for his daughter, just like the game.

I agree with everyone that the decision to change the main character from male to female was  a mistake.

For those of you that played the game, what was the creature that had the Iron Triangle on it's head.  That thing was bad a$$.

Its official name is called "Pyramid Head". If I remember right they were executioners of prisoners in towns early days. Can't kill them in the game either.

The stupid thing is that Pyramid Head didn't appear until the 2nd game and was actually vital to the plot of that one.

The first time you run into one you can't kill it. You can shoot at it or simply avoid it till it leaves. Later on though you have to fight and kill 2 of them.

I'm really not bothered with changing a character/gender of character (one of my favourites was in Guyver: Out of Control where they replaced the Guyver 2 "Lisker" character with a hot redhead chick and gave us a very graphic nude transformation scene, yay!) but I can't say I'm fond of the reason they did it. A father has every bit as much love for his child as the mother does.      ...At least as far as I know.
