I watched this one last night during the middle of a raging thunderstorm, and I loved it!  Ventriloquists' puppets have always creeped me out a little bit, and seeing these evil ones was a genuine shiver!  That, and the twist ending did catch me by surprise.  What did you guys think of this one?

Well, given the panning by both critics of the professional and amateur persuasion I was going to avoid this like the plague until I needed it for a "killer ventriloquist dolls" roundtable, but if it gets enough positive support such as your own I might have to consider it for legitimate rental. Besides, Highlander was a widespread critical failure too when it came out, so who knows how good Dead Silence may actually be to everyone else...

The problem with film critics is that they don't approach movies the way the general public does.  If it entertains or scares me, I like it.  They're so jaded that a movie has to be either brilliant or perverse for them to rate it highly.

Well, that's why I included "amateur critics" in my statement, of which I would include yourself as you've now made your opinion of a movie known in a public forum.  :tongueout:

Anyway, if four more people can vouch for it, I'll give it a rent!

Thanks for reminding me about this. Looks like it might be up there with 'Magic' with Anthony Hopkins.

The Burgomaster

I bought this DVD yesterday.  It has its good moments, but overall I think it could have (and should have) been better.  I give it a 6 on a scale of 1 to 10.
"Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me either. Just pretty much leave me the hell alone."

Fishasaurus

I liked a lot of it, but I think the movie was sort of dented by the lackluster acting of some of the lead roles.  Dude, if yer gonna live in a totally Goth backwater town dripping with menace, ACT LIKE IT.

I've noticed that the unrated DVD runs a minute longer approximately.  Is it actually more gore in the unrated cut?

EDIT: Answered my own question.

QuoteUnrated DVD contains the following extended shots which were omitted from the "R" rated version.
Mary Shaw has a creepy, disgusting, long tongue.
A gorier death for Henry, as Mary Shaw is shown eating Henry's tongue and saying "I now have your voice, Henry."
The tongue comes out and licks Jamie after the clown admits the "secret" to him about his wife.
