From DVD Drive-In:

QuoteUniversal will be releasing two exciting DVD box sets in time for Halloween as "Best Buy" Store exclusives. A "Horror Collection" set will include MAN-MADE MONSTER, HORROR ISLAND, CAPTIVE WILD WOMAN, NIGHT MONSTER and THE BLACK CAT (1941). A second "Sci-Fi Collection" set will include DR. CYCLOPS, THE DEADLY MANTIS, THE LAND UNKNOWN, THE LEECH WOMAN and CULT OF THE COBRA. No release date has been set yet, but Best Buy's press contact confirms that the sets will arrive before Halloween with retail prices of around $20 a piece.

Woo Hoo!! I'm really looking forward to that second Sci-Fi collection as it will have two of my favorites from the 50's: The Deadly Mantis and Cult of the Cobra.

The FDA has been looking for a generic name for Viagra. After careful consideration by a team of government experts, it recently announced that it has settled on the generic name of Mycoxafloppin. Also considered were Mycoxafailin, Mydixadrupin, Mydixarizin, Dixafix, and of course, Ibepokin.

"The Deadly Mantis" at long last.  I still remember being creeped out by that as a kid.  I mean, they finally chase it into the tunnel and then they have to gas it to death!  The swirling gas fit right in with the whole fog theme that they had going for a while.

It is good to see some of the studios releasing these old science fiction and horror movies on good quality DVDs.  Now, where is my special edition of "From Hell It Came?"

I'm surprised that Universal didn't include The Thing That Couldn't Die in one of those sets. Oh, well. Here's hoping for another box set of some sort further down the line.

Other 50's films that need R1 release in addition to From Hell It Came include:

The Maze
The Magnetic Monster
Monster of Piedras Blancas
Curucu, Beast of the Amazon
Invasion of the Saucer Men
The Amazing Colossal Man
I was a Teenage Frankenstein
I was a Teenage Werewolf
Terror from the Year 5000
The H-Man (Bijo to Ekitainingen)
The Quatermass Xperiment AKA The Creeping Unknown
Quatermass 2 AKA Enemy from Space
The Cosmic Monsters
The Beast of Hollow Mountain
Colossus of New York

Among others. Plus, there are a couple dozen films that need good, quality releases rather than the budget releases so far. Oh, well.

I do have an Anchor Bay DVD of "Quatermass 2" that, if memory serves, was a nice quality disc.  Definitely with you on "The H-Man" and "Invasion of the Saucer Men."  Another I would like to add to the list is "Caltiki."

I say it's worth it for Cult of the Cobra.  Of all the people-turning-into-reptiles movies, it is clearly the best.

And I blame James Nicholson's wife for the fact that we have yet to see DVD releases of It Conquered the World, Invasion of the Saucer Men, and of course, The Amazing Colossal Man.  If she weren't so stubborn, we'd all be happier.

She owns the rights to I WAS A TEENAGE WEREWOLF and I WAS A TEENAGE FRANKENSTEIN too I believe.

Yeah, she really needs to get off her high horse and let them be released on DVD. I hear she is lawsuit happy and tries to bully people. If that's true, it's a real pity, as she was quite the stunning looker when she was young. Not someone you'd think would become so angry.

I wish I had bought that first set 'cause now it sells for a pretty penny on eBay (plus it was a nice collection).   :bluesad:

That's a great deal at 20 bucks a piece for each 5 movie set.

Are the films presented in their original aspect ratios and are digitally remastered as well?
