Aussie TV Show

There was a show broadcast in the U.S. on either PBS or the Discovery Channel back in the 80s/90s called something like "How Things Work." I believe it was a 70s/80s show from Australia. The premise of the show (big surprise) was to explain how various technologies work. It was notable for featuring odd animations (I believe done by the host, who was, to say the least, a bit unique in an offbeat kind of way). Does anyone remember this show and its real title? Mostly I'm wanting the theme song from the show, or at least the composer (to look for similar music), but the show title would be a great lead.

Was this a really ancient show (possibly 60s/70s) in B&W with an old professor?

I also remember another Aussie science show I think from the 80s hosted by a guy with a porno mustache...

No, it was in color. The host was this disheveled guy whose hair was usually messed up (much of the show happened outside). The more I think about the man's accent, it could have been a British show. But for some reason I'm remembering it was Australian.

I've done a bit of searching and the first show I described is called "Why is it so?" hosted by Professor Julius Sumner-Miller. I think that's the one you're after.

Professor Julius Sumner Miller?! He was also a regular on the Canadian series "The Hilarious House of Frightenstein"...maybe those segments were actually borrowed from here??

That looks like an interesting show, but, alas, it is not the one I'm looking for. 

Oy! The name came back to me! It's The Secret Life of Machines, a BBC production from 1988, 1991 and 1993. The theme song was "The Russians Are Coming."
