Spiderman DVD question

I can recall (due to the events of Sept. 11th 2001) that the trailer showing the twin towers was cut from every vhs/dvd copy of 'A Knights Tale' and was only shown a couple of times on CNN.

Any thoughts on this trailer being in a special edition of Spider-Man on DVD?

I think it would boost the sale of the DVD tremendously, and furthermore, it would show that the events did happen instead of trying to ignore them. Recently, Wing Commander on this site was villified for the actors pretending their dead comerades didn't exist - and remembering the towers through a fun movie like SPIDER MAN just seems right - or maybe that's just me. Thoughts?

I've wondered at that myself, Noodle. That trailer was sweet, and why not throw it on the DVD? Anyone whose feelings would be hurt by seeing the towers in a film trailer is a p***y  anyway so I don't care. That trailer cost money, and it is a part of Spidey's ride to the big screen, and shouldn't be ignored.

I wouldn't call someone who lost a loved one in the attacks a "p***y," but if the trailer were included in supplementary material, those who didn't wish to see it could easily avoid it.

That trailer, in my mind, became a more significant part of movie history because of its connection to Sept. 11. It should certainly be made available, and the DVD seems like an ideal place for it. I would not be surprised if it also appears in some future documentary.

Chadzilla

I think it should be included (phony assed PC protectionists be damned to eternal hell).  The trailer was cool.  Also we should note that Raimi DID NOT digtally erase the twin towers from Spiderman.  Evidently they are in there in some long shots, he felt that digitally erasing them would be disrepectful and cruel.  Ah sanity, so refreshing.

i Just dont see why even after the attack was over the clip of the buildings exploding was still being showed over and over, but when a trailer has a picture of the buildings everyone kicks up a stick. In HOME ALONE II (it was on tv a while ago) Hes ont he top of one of the towers, and they shoed that on tv, I would have thought that'd been edited out.

Well, that's the funny thing: no one actually made a big deal about the Spider-Man trailer. Sony just pulled it after the attack so they wouldn't been accused of exploiting the tragedy or anything like that. It is, after all, just a trailer.

If was afterwards that the controversy started; one of the best Simpsons episodes ever, centered in part around the Towers, is currently out of syndicated circulation; yet one in which a lunatic commandeers an aircraft carrier and successfully uses its guns to bring down an entire skyscraper--in Manhattan no less--still shows uncut. Who can figure that out?

And of course, the news media will exploit footage of the real destruction as long as it's profitable to do so--but pretend that they're doing it for the public's sake.

I guess my fear is that by censoring this trailer it seems to be inviting people to believe that Sept. 11th didn't happen. There were video games and movie trailers and even major movie plots that got altered due to the attacks and destruction of the World Trade Center towers.

Since Spider Man was also the first comic book to have the courage to depict the events of the attacks in the comic realm, it seems only fitting that this trailer be on the DVD as supplemental material (so people who may not want to see it don't have to, as mentioned in another post) or at the very least, as an easter egg on the disc.

Excellent thoughts, any ideas where to send them so DVD creators know it's worthwhile to leave it in?

Yeah, and in A.I., which is set in the far future, the Towers are still standing even after the world is flooded. Just three months after the film came out the buildings were taken down by some planes. Spielberg's visionary title is in jeopardy...
Look, I think the way most people are trying to be "sensitive" about this whole thing is ridiculous. Those buildings did exist, and should not be edited out of anything. If we're supposed to remember the tragedy and understand it, why must the media and entertainers insist on pretending the WTC never existed?

StatCat

I don't see any point to edit or hide anything out that shows the WTC. It happened and people can't act like they never existed. The whole trailer mess with the towers is certainly not disrespectful so I don't see the big deal.

jmc

I don't think it's disrespectful, nor do I think people are trying to pretend like it didn't exist.  I think Sony did the right thing in pulling the trailer, because feelings were still very raw at that time.   I'm probably one of the biggest critics of political correctness you will ever find, but I don't think this is really that.

I recently saw a scene in a film which featured the towers in the background and it distracted me so much that I couldn't really pay attention to the main events on screen.  That might be part of Sony's motivation too.

justsomeguy

I guess I could see that happening but hey everyone is different.  I agree with Spielberg on his vision that the twin towers should still be standing far into the future.

In my opinion we should rebuild them and if they get attacked again then rebuild and if they get attacked again then rebuild and if they get attacked again then rebuild and if they get attacked again then we should blow away their whole f**king country or countries.  You might not agree, but that is why we live in a democracy.  So that some psyco (like me) doesn't blow up whole countries.

However, we should invade all those f**ked up countries and make them set up a democracy so that they might have better lives and wouldn't be so quick to kill themselves to go to "heaven" (bulls**t) s**tty conditions would make anyone want to die.

I don't know but it seems that the Muslim religion has been twisted and is being used to brainwash weak minded people.  At least I hope the religion has been twisted because if suicide bombing and murder is the way to go for a Muslim then @!#$ that @!#$!  If that is the way it truly is then isn't that conspiring to murder? And can't you go to jail for that? Ought to.

Any way I can't wait for the SPIDERMAN-DVD to come out!

justsomeguy
