I grew up in the 80's listening to all kinds of metal.  I actually had Slayer's "Show No Mercy" and Metallica's "Kill 'Em All" on vinyl back when they originally came out in 1983.  Growing up my entire bedroom was plastered with almost every single Iron Maiden poster that I could find in stores.

While I listened to a lot more true underground metal, I also dabbled into some of the more pop metal acts like Def Leppard, Dokken, Ratt and Cinderella.

I never was too much into death metal though I did like a few bands like Morbid Angel, Malevolent Creation, Death and old Deicide & Cannibal Corpse.

I would say that thrash metal is my favorite type of metal.  Bands like Megadeth, Exodus, Testament, Slayer, (old school) Metallica, (Belladona era) Anthrax.....stuff like that is still some of my favorite metal around.   I also love what's considered power metal (Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Iced Earth).

My listening tastes have been extremely varied as I've gotten older and I listen to almost anything if it's truly good music.    Most new metal bores me as it all sounds the same.

I do however like some more modern metal acts like Lamb of God, Mastodon, Quo Vadis, Cryptopsy, Dimmu Borgir.

I played in a few bands in the 80's.  One with a level of success.
While I love that music, the stuff that gets me now is the 70's metal.  Uriah Heep's Steelin, Deep Purple's Highway Star, that kinda thing.
From the 80's...My favorites are anything by Manowar, Keel or something in that line.

Sabbath - "Paranoid" is one of my most favorite songs of all time.  Fun to play, too, but then so is "Fairies Wear Boots."  When I was in college, I worked in a ski resort handing out rental skis, and me and buddy of mine (an electrical engineering major) who also worked there rigged a tape player into the public address system.  I remember the night we played "Hand of Doom," complete with echoing off the mountains, and some older folks complained.   :teddyr:

Really, mostly it was a lot of fun.  One night it was "college night" and we had large groups up from Clemson - that night we had guys and gals coming in to say "thanks for playing such cool music - it's the only reason we did not leave."  Our playlist included Rush (the live version of "Closer to the Heart" on EXIT STAGE LEFT sounded great with the echoes), older BTO, Sabbath, etc.  Man that was a blast.

Speaking of Anthrax, do you remember the episode of "Married ... With Children" that had Anthrax?

I liked a lot of the 80's metal.  Some of it I still do - still listen to Iron Maiden with NUMBER OF THE BEAST being my favorite album; my 4 year old daughter will often sing "Run To The Hills," which is likely her all time most favorite song.  Some of the 80's metal I listened to I hesitate to admit now and it really turned into cookie cutter stuff there for a while.

YES!!!  I'm a HUGE King Diamond fan

A lot of people don't know that Primus' guitarist Larry "Ler" Lalonde was a guitarist in Possessed back in the day.

My favorite King Diamond albums are Abigail and Them.

I also love the 1st 2 Mercyful Fate albums Melissa and Don't Break the Oath.

Their very 1st album Sirens is one of the unsung classics of power metal.    I like their 80's stuff the best.

It was a huge loss to the metal/music community when original guitarist Chris Oliva (who was brothers with singer John Oliva) died in a car wreck.
