I've heard a lot about it today and saw part of her performance on the news.  The performance was a bit blah but honestly, I always thought she was a no talent hick.  In other words, I don't know why this is so overhyped.  Shouldn't we just expect a bad performance period?   I can't get YouTube at my work place so hopefully I can upload a video later.

Well there are different types of recording artist out there. Britney Spears is/was good at what she is. A bubble gum teen girl pop act. The question is why would they have her as an opening act at the VMA which is suppose to be an edgy event.

It was like when they had Ashley Simpson perform at half time during the College Football National Championship. Why would they think beer drinking football fans want to see Ashley Simpson?

Like, six years ago, Britney sucking it up at a live performance would have been a really big deal because she was at the top of her game and making money hand over fist.  Whether or not she was any good at what she did was irrelevant because when it came to her, it was never about her singing and dancing talent.  It was all about marketing her brand and quickly as possible.

Today, however, Britney has become nothing more than a tabloid icon.  When they announced that she was staging a comeback at the VMAs the entire world took a deep breath and started anticipating the kind of trainwreck that only post-shaven head Britney could provide.  Everyone is feigning shock at her performance, but really everyone knew it was going to suck.

It wasn't the complete disaster that the tabloid websites want you to think it was.  I've read that she's out of shape and the performance was a clusterf**k.  I expected her to look like a woman who has had two kids and lives on a diet of Marlboro lights, Hostess Apple Pies and Red Bull but she just looked like the Britney Spears they photographed walking out of a gas station bathroom with her bare feet.  Musically, the song sucked, but so do all of her others, so what else is new?

The press was just expecting a complete bi-polar meltdown, mid performance and huge headlines that are the final nail in her coffin but what they got was what Britney has always done.  The only thing everyone has failed to consider is that she's doing the same old stuff to a crowd that was obsessed with her when they were 12.  Now they're 20.  Do the math.

Britney Spears was never about the music. The woman never has been able to sing and the whole point to her is just marketing herself as a brand and not as true musical substance.

Say what you want about Madonna, but she has managed to transcend pop trends for 25 years now and has managed to keep her popularity up while also actually managing to make some really good music as well at various points.  The fact that she actually can sing and writes/co-writes most of her own material is why critics view her more as an artist than just as a fad.

Britney Spears looked her best when she was first coming onto the pop scene back in the late 90's.

From looking at the video, Britney actually still looks pretty good.

It's not a big deal with me if a woman has a little extra weight on her in places.  But Britney had a huge error wearing that revealing of an outfit.  If she had worn something that covered up her midriff but still showed off her cleavage, people wouldn't have been talking about her being "fat".

Ye-ouch!

I saw one picture with her holding a cigarette down right near where one of her kids was.  Now that's bad.

Sad to see where she & Lohan are these days.

There's a glowing endorsement.

ALL of those bring to Mind the following Dorothy Parker quotes"

"Beautyis only skin deep, but ugly goes clean to the bone."

and

"She looks like something that would eat its young."

Just think, boys and girls, all the air-time and media play these losers get takes away from more substantial focus the media COULD have.
