SQUASH

oh man! last night i saw this ass dumb movie called "red sonja". i definately think a review needs to be done on it. the leading woman (red sonja) has a flaming mullet, and just to lure you in if you arent hooked already, it is one of arnold swarzenegger's first films! it is almost a C movie. and maybe "Thoroughly Modern Millie" is somehthing worth watching. so. yup. -=-the squash-=-

Or maby "Fred Sonia"....when Wilma goes apes*&t and has a sex change, caveman style. I'm sorry....brain fart. Yeah, she looked cool, and strong enough to pull it off, but lets face it, acting ain't the long suit of these flicks. And Ah-nold as treated like the center(cod)piece of the story. High MST rateing, but other then that.....

Actually,"Red Sonja" was Brigitte Nielsen's first movie, and Arnold's first movie appearance was the extremely schlocky "Hercules In New York".
Too bad somebody isn't wise enough to either make a redux of this film(with an original, more better plot, and a more talented, much prettier actress),or at least a syndicated TV series(at least "Conan" lucked into that kind of a deal, even if it didn't last very long).

You.  Are.  Forgetting.  The.  Little.  KID.

My biggest disappointment was that the little bastard survived. I wanted to see the Big Fat Oaf get tired of his whining and just sit on his head 'til he died. Kenny from Gamera The Invincible has got NOTHING on this punk in terms of annoyance...

Squishy

Follow-up: I thought Big Fat Oaf looked familar! Paul Smith! He's been in a lot of "notable" stuff--Dune, Crimewave, Gor--his last role listed at the IMDb is in 1994's Maverick.

The little bastard is also familiar: Ernie Reyes Jr. from TNMT2, Surf Ninjas, and, God help us, The Last Dragon. he's still working, appearing in Rush Hour 2. I haven't seen it yet; hope he's had some acting lessons...

My favorite thing about Red Sonja:
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon copied a scene.

Remember when Brigette and Ahnold duel until they're too exhausted to move? Same thing in CT,HD.....Zhang Zhi vs. the Bandit Guy.  I swear, it's a straight xerox!

ErikJ

I would say a direct copy or something. However I thought that the bandit was a girl? Either way it is fair to say that it was gotten from there, so original now. I never thought about it till now after seeing this post.

My favorite thing about this movie was the way that Red Sonja kept leaving Falkon (the Big Oaf) and Prince Tarn (the Kid) behind, yet she always found them ahead of her when it was time for her to stop for the night.  You can't screw up continuity that badly by accident.

And interestingly enough, IMDB has a listing for a new version of Red Sonja in production for 2008.

SQUASH,

Review?  You can read a sort-of of review here.  I think that should sate your curiosity, for a while.

Actually a remake/new Red Sonja was announced (click here) around June/July of last year.

As for a Red Sonja TV series, not a bad idea, but considering the last I heard about the movie was it was held up in litigation (something about who has the right to use the name) perhaps it's just as well.  I caught a bit of one episode of that Conan series and it blew worse than the Beastmaster series.  Of course that's just IMHO YMMV.

Even though I doubt that it would improve the movie all that much, I have read that the original cut of the movie was butchered pretty bad to shorten it and avoid a R rating.

Here's the IMDB link for the remake that's supposed to be coming out sometime in 2008.

I've read elsewhere that they're going to be going back to the comic source for this new one and that it could probably end up being a completely different film.

i watched this recently and was impressed by the score to the movie and the way it was shot.  nothing great about the plot, but it's not nearly as awful as some adventure movies.  Brigette could have used more acting lessons, but at least she looked the part.  if they do another version, they will probably cast Paris Hilton in it, or some other stick woman.
