The Incredibles

I just re watched this the other night on television.  I love this film for it's twist on superheroes.  Its one of those films people of all ages can enjoy.

About 2 years ago they were playing this film for free in the movie theater at the time share I have. We were looking for something to do so I took my daughter, who was 5 at the time. She really wasn't into going to see it because she didn't like the ads for it that had been on tv.

She sat and watched it and we laughed and had a good time. Any film that doesn't have animated talking animals that could make her laugh is a great film...and I really enjoyed it too.

Loved every minute of it, from the superhero satire and the more-serious-than-you-could expect plot, to the taylor's monologue about superhero suits and the John Barry-esque score.

I need to see it again someday.

A series just about Edna Mode, super-hero costume designer would be great...Am I the only one who kept thinking about Sam Jackson (as the voice of Frozone) doing the "Snakes on a  Plane" rant?

I liked this one a lot, because it picked the right places to have fun with the superhero genre.  Violet and Dash fighting at the dinner table, Mr. Incredible pining for the old days of glory, Edna Mode and her fascination with creating super-suits tailored for the superhero, and Syndrome's entire character were great.  Not to mention that using Jason Patrick as Syndrome seemed like perfect casting.  Actually, overall the voice casting was excellent.

Brad Bird seems to have a good handle on what he is doing, though I still think "The Iron Giant" is my favorite of his three big features.

I also love THE INCREDIBLES.  My daughter likes it, too.  I think Pixar took a bit of a chance going with a relative outsider like Bird, but it paid off.  His style is certainly quite different from Lasseter, Stanton and the other Pixar "insiders."

Thanks for that correction.  Stupid mistake, but they happen.  I could see the right person in my mind.

Great movie it has me praying for a sequel with the same cast. And I rarely ask for this because I go 'it'll suck.'

I think the voice actress for Violet (Sarah Vowell) was absolutely show-stealing.   She had that muttering teenager thing down absolutely perfectly.    "Well... we're not doing so hot ourSELVES..."    I couldn't stop laughing.

on the DVD there is a feature about Sarah, and it's pretty funny too.  She's a total Abraham Lincoln history nut, and you can tell that she understands absolutely how mind-blastingly tedious it all is... and she grins and inflicts it on people.   She talks about how she was cast for the part and she was looking at the pictures of the superheroes, then she saw the gawky teenager standing in line, looking uncomfortable and trying to be invisible, and she said, "oh yeah, I can do that part for sure!"

Pixar is the only animation outfit that picks standard actors to do voice acting and really makes it work.  They seem to cast standard actors based on who fits the characters, rather than fitting their characters to certain actors.  You might also notice that, unlike Dreamworks, they also really don't play up who is doing the voices, which I think is out of place in animated films in general anyway. 

I enjoyed Shrek and Shrek 2, but they and the other films of their ilk won't really ever quite be classics in the same way Pixar's better efforts are.  The Incredibles is an excellent film across the board.

Dreamworks does play up the 'celebrity' aspect of it.  But regarding Shrek and Shrek 2, I loved Eddie Murphy as Donkey, but my two favorite characters, and in my opinion, the most funny characters are Gingerbread Man and Pinocchio.

Watch them again, and they steal the show.

Ditto. If the same people were involved (and genuinely motivated ;) I'd see it without a second thought.

Brad Bird is the epitome of everything that is right with the medium of Animation today (See how I called it a medium instead of a genre?  That's from the book of Brad).  He just totally gets what it's all about, and it shows.  The Incredibles is, to this day, my all time favorite Pixar production...and that's saying a lot, because Pixar has put out some truly remarkable films.

I just love that other people also realize the beneifts of picking voice actors who fit the characters, rather than vice versa...I'm convinced that if any other studio had been doing The Incredibles, you would have had Lindsey Lohan, or someone similar, doing the voice of Violet, and it wouldn't have worked.

But the studio wouldn't have cared, because they would have gone on a tremendous marketing blitz, showcasing her, and all the other big name celebrities they got to voice their film.  Unfortunately, right now, it's a marketing tool that works, because the other studios don't have the kind of name recognition for quality that Pixar has, and feel like they can't take as many chances with the casting.   

I was a little hesitant about the idea of a sequel at first...but now I think if you got the same people behind it, it could be just as good as Toy Story 2 was.
